I rejoice she sought to protect her own, and particularly saw Frodo as one of her charges. Is she related, do you think, to Anemone? Author Reply: In the Armariel-verse, both fairies and waterfolk are a sort of Maiar, but they have different creators. Ulmo, of course, made the water people, including Goldberry, Nimrodel, and yes, Anemone. But fairies were made by Irmo, of whom Tolkien tells us his gardens were "filled with many spirits." Those spirits being what we would term Fairies. So Petal and Anemone are similar, yet different. I'm thinking fairies are less attracted to mortals than are seafolk, which are greatly drawn to them in folklore, at least, usually to their detriment. Petal is a notable exception. I'm thinking she might be a sort of Eternal Feminine...yes, I guess I'm a bit hung up on the idea, but what the heck. We'll just see where it goes! Thanks much for commenting Larner! ~~~~~{~@ | |
