I do think that you were mistaken with this one. It would have been the highlight of his life, and perhaps the reason he set the bride-price for her so very high when the time came. His little nightengale....

Author Reply: I am glad you thought this event fit to fill in the prompt. And yes, I'm beginning to have a hope that I was mistaken about doubting this piece at last... Heheh.

Elu Thingol's high and dire bride price was what struck me and moved me to write about this event in the end, indeed. For one who had never seen any of the Silmarili and had never cared much for them, it was strange for him to demand one from Beren if the Secondborn would take his daughter's hand in marriage. I often thought about why he would be moved to do that, aside from the doom carried by those three jewels, and this was the answer, although I didn't think it was satisfactory then. Still, I'm glad you liked it, and appreciated it even more than the writer did. :wry: Thanks!

A very nice ficlet. There aren't enough stories about Luthien in general, and fewer still that examine her relationship with her father. This must have been a huge moment in Elu's long life; and I could see it happening this way.

Author Reply: Well, one reason why there aren't a lot of stories about Luthien might be because many people view her (and Beren) as Mary-Sue... Dunno, but I often encountered one-shots mocking them, almost more than those instead digging into the skeleton-story the Professor has provided us. Truth be told, I also fumbled about when writing this little piece; I didn't know how to portray the moment, and what to do about Elu's thoughts regarding his daughter (that wasn't too baran or too mushy). Reading The Lay of Leithian made my head ache, so I got things mostly from reading Philosopher At Large's dramatic script. (I know, not nice when you're venturing to write it anyway, but the Old English isn't friendly with my EFL brain. *grimace*)

I'd imagine that, with how Elu 'attacked' Beren with such vigor when Luthien brought that hapless young man to him, she must have a very special place in her father's heart; so the deep affection might have started right from when Elu had first beheld her. The bit about his originally wanting a son was thrown in just for reality sake. (Huh... I was fumbling with that too, and until now I'm not sure if I should've put it there.)

I'm so sorry I didn't reply sooner. RL hasn't been kind to me for the whole of last year, and it is only marginally tolerant of me this year. In fact I haven't visited this site for months, literally. So... thank you for the review? (But seriously, I highly appreciate that, and the thoughtful comment you made. Thanks!)
