Too bad the pictures are no longer in LiveJournal. I would have liked to see them! Oh, well, at least, I've got the DVD, so seen Bilbo wearing that robe in the movie itself. What a touching mother's gift that must have been! Author Reply: Oh dear! I didn't realize the link had broken. I wonder if it's still at MPTT! I don't know if I can find a new screencap now. I knew the minute I saw him that his mother had made it for him.

Oh, what a beautiful and touching story! And a wonderful farewell present. I do agree that Bilbo looks a lot like Pippin in these pictures! And that's not a bad thing :-) His mother would have been proud.

Indeed, Belladonna must have made it for Bilbo! How gorgeous a "coat of many colors"! He reminds me a good deal of Billy Boyd as Pippin here! Author Reply: Who else would have worked so hard on such a garment? He does look extremely Tookish in that one picture! I'm so pleased that there seems to be some family resemblance. That was one thing about the casting of the hobbits: each of the three young men had some (though not all)features in common, which made it very easy to think of them as cousins! (It was especially obvious in some of the publicity shots showing them dressed in their post-Quest finery!)

The same illness that had laid both Bungo and Belladonna low during the Fell Winter, the illness that had nearly claimed both of them when their son was still only a young tween, had permanently damaged their health, as it had many other hobbits of their generation—those that were spared at the time. This is a great explanation for their atypically early deaths. Some while back, I calculated the lifespans of all the hobbits on the family trees for whom there are both birth and death dates in Appendix C. I believe I omitted Frodo's parents, as theirs were not natural deaths. I remember the average age at death was exactly 100. The Old Took (and Bilbo, of course) were the only ones who lived longer than 106. The Old Took skewed the results a bit, but since there's no death date for Bilbo, I couldn't count him. Saradoc died unusually young -- I believe you and Larner both worked that into fics, and at least one fic involved an accident; it would be interesting to know what JRRT had in mind. I may also have looked to see who died at the time of the Fell Winter, but I don't remember what I found.

What a wonderful gift Belladonna gave her son. I love this idea and the explanation for his patchwork robe from the movie stills. Author Reply: Thanks! When I saw that picture, it seemed obvious that his mother must have made it for him! I'm glad that you like the idea!

I adore this. That is a lovely idea. I liked the photos of Bilbo from the film the minute I saw them and this is a wonderful idea as to how he might have got his dressing gown. Bravo! Author Reply: As soon as I laid eyes on that dressing gown I knew his mother must have made it for him!! I'm glad you like the idea too.
