| This conversation had to have taken place at some point. Yeah, the general attitude must have been, "They're descended from who-all?" and "So what are they?" and "Nobody's family tree could be that mixed up: you're just pulling my leg!" My Sindarin is -- to say the least -- poor, but I'm enjoying translating these elves' names as Wise Guy and Windbag. I'm also enjoying contemplating the supposed purpose for this list -- whether seriously or not. A census of all who fought in the War of Wrath? A census of all the elves of Beleriand who might end up wanting to sail to Aman? A census of all the elves of Beleriand who had a connection with Aman, to notify their relatives in Aman, should they die or refuse to sail? Or simply one of a list of several dozen crazy but totally pointless requests designed to punish Istadan and Sűlion? And then there's the question of whose nerves they got on (not necessarily the same person who gave them their assignment): Arafinwë? Gil-galad? Celeborn? Círdan? Eönwë? Author Reply: Yeah, they do have an interesting background, don't they? I think that Windbag's name actually translates to "son of the wind", but I'm sure that Istadan thought that Windbag would suit him well... I'm not really certain who they angered. I think that once the two were born, someone realized that since they were destined to be the leaders of the remnants of Gondolin and the folk of Doriath, it was important to know their exact lineage. Obviously this story poses more questions than it answers! LOL! Thanks for reading and reviewing! | |
