“Of course I am! Frodo corrected me—loudly, I might add—the first time he caught me using the wrong one.” He paused. “Say, it isn’t terrible that I’m not ‘theeing’ and ‘thouing’ every time I have to talk to you, is it? I don’t want to make things more difficult for you…” “Peregrin, I believe that the people of Gondor are—albeit slowly—learning that using the familiar is the way of your people.” “And as for me,” said Aragorn, “you may use whatever pronoun you wish to address me, especially out of court.” “Hmm… I should see if anyone can think up a good hobbit-dialect-pronoun for ‘hoy, you stupid clod.’” “I am fairly certain,” said Aragorn, “that if you had one, I should have been called it many times over while I was in Bree.” “Strider, just because we both know you’re right doesn’t mean you have to rub it in my face all the time!” “No, I do not have to.” Pippin sighed and walked off in a huff. Now this had me howling and wiping tears of laughter from my eyes! And, my dear, this humor is so YOU! Author Reply: I loved the gentle ribbing that we get from Aragorn in the books, and I think he would have relished the opportunity to do it after his coronation. Thanks!

Thank you. This was delightful and so in character for all of them. I remember battling with familiar pronouns when learning German. Author Reply: I remember my own woes when learning French, and the shock that we had them in English, once, was very pleasant once I lined them up with Shakespeare and King James. I loved the stuff in Tolkien's appendix about pronouns and hobbit dialects, so I really relished the opportunity to stick it into one of my fics.

*giggles* Ah, pronouns! So very fun to deal with, lol. And familiar vs. formal usage...oh dear. :) I'm still getting my "haths" and "hasts" mixed up when I need to use them for my Maiar, Eru and such... Kaylee Author Reply: Yeah, I love the fact that hobbits mostly got rid of that stuff (as we did). Must have been a headache for Pippin, though!
