Christmas at Edhellond: An Elf Academy Tale  by Fiondil 11 Review(s)

Poor Finrod. Battle-hardened warrior or not, he'll still need some time to recover from that incident.

Why the Mortals didn't stick to horses instead of cars? Easy answer. Cars aren't only faster, but a lot dryer in torrential rain or a snowstorm – and they have heating ;) You know I love horses, but there's something to be said for more than one horsepower.

Finrod had a rather strange reaction to making these snowflakes. We have seen some of these flashbacks, but one that's all wrong and he recognises it is a new one. And the one to his rescue was even more unusual. But it fits with the Christmas theme, the date and what the old people did to help him.

Author Reply: You're right about that, KItty, especially when a gunshot wound is totally outside his frame of reference. And obviously his flashback is born of the emotional stress of his injury and his fears of what could have happened to him and to his son had things not gone as they did. Luckily, there are many who are anxious to help him work his way through all this and find his joy again. We'll see how it goes as the story progresses. Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

"Starlight-on-Snow"! What a lovely name for a tuning on a harp. I play one, badly, so I can imagine the sound! I wonder how many other names can be imagined for tunings? I like that sort of name much better than the standards.

Author Reply: Hi Lynn. Well, it stands to reason that the Elves would have developed a system of naming keys other than referring to the key of C or B flat minor or whatever and they would have used terms reflecting nature, I think. I've posited other tuning names in some of my other stories. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the concept. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

I loved the elves going to the senior home to sing for the residents. I have done that myself and the people are so thankful.
Finrod's flashback or whatever that was sounded awful. But St. Nick came to the rescue. I wonder who that was. It seems that Finrod is mixing the new stuff he learns with his memories.

Author Reply: Hi obsidianj. We'll see more of St. Nick in the next chapter. As to who he is, that remains to be seen. We may never get a straight answer to that question, and ultimately, it doesn't really matter, does it? What matters is that Finrod needed help and it came. Anyway, thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Wow. What a perfect thing to read on such a sad day. I pray he was with the small children today and for their families. I also want to say how wonderful your story is. It can help me to escape from the many terrible things in the world. Thank you! Thank you for sharing your gift. You write them in a way that makes me truly believe.

Author Reply: Hi Laer. I'm sure St. Nicholas was there with all the angels. Thanks for leting me know how much you enjoy my writing and especially this story. I appreciate you taking the time to do so.

The elves going to a nursing home is such a blessing. I volunteered on one for six years. In fact, I helped with a Christmas show last Wednesday held for the residence. I know first hand how much things like this means to them. Their lives tend to be very lonely.

Author Reply: I used to help out at a senior center many years ago before I went overseas and I drew on my experiences there for this chapter. I haven't gotten around to re-volunteering at the center now that I'm back, but I did enjoy helping out where I could. You're right that the lives of the residents can be very lonely and they appreciate people actually taking the time to visit with them. Anyway, thanks for commenting, Tari. I appreciate it.

What a chapter to read today as the country reels from another senseless attack. I pray St. Nicholas was with these children during the horror.

Author Reply: Yes, a real tragedy, Agape. It really makes you wonder where this world is heading. Hopefully this chapter gave you a few minutes of pleasure in the midst of the horror.

Jolly Old St. Nicholas to the rescue! I was expecting everything but that. You are a master in surprising me. BTW, my daughter was practicing Christmas song on the piano and that was one of the carols that she was playing, she likes it very much. Thank you.

Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. You know me: I always do the unexpected. *grin* Glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Atto,

Happy The Hobbit Day! *grin* (And to the residents of Wiseman, Elven and not, happy belated St. Nicholas' Day :) well, belated for us, not them I guess :D)

I rejoice that St. Nicholas was there to lead Finrod back. While my family doesn't celebrate St. Nicholas' Day, I quite like it and do like to remember that there was a real St. Nicholas who was and is (among other things) the patron of sailors and merchants, as well as children. No doubt he's had a lot of practice seeking lost souls.

That being said, I'm not sure whether it's the spirit of the real St. Nicholas who came for Finrod (bit of a long way to come from the Timeless Halls or wherever Mortal spirits end up?) or a Maia or even Vala. I'll venture a guess at either Olorin or Manwe however. Namo's too busy playing Nate to play St. Nicholas...

Have a wonderful day, and a wonderful weekend, Atto.

Tye-melin,

Kaylee

Author Reply: Hi Kaylee. The question of whether it really was St. Nicholas or someone else will come up for discussion in the next chapter. We'll see how others react to what happened to Finrod then. Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate it. And have a wonderful weekend, too. Tye-melin.

I rejoice that St. Nicholas came to lead him back, but am also wondering what kind of attack it is he's known here. Sounds like he got a dose of the Black Breath.

(Could you shoot me an email, so I can put your address into my new address book? B

Author Reply: Hi Larner. Finrod finds himself in the Fens of Serech where he was cut off from the rest of his army during the Battle of Sudden Flame (Dagor Bragollach) and would have been captured or killed except that Barahir and his men fought their way to his side and rescued him. It was then that he gave Barahir his serpent ring. What he experiences is an alternate history in which Barahir failed to save him. It does seem as if he's suffered something similar to the Black Breath, but never having met any of the Nazgūl, I doubt that's what it is, merely a flashback that reflects his state of mind at this time. Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated. Email has been sent.

Another great chapter. I know the residents of the home loved having the elves come sing. Finrod is having a hard time, but I love the way help keeps arriving in unusual ways. As always, thank you.

Author Reply: Hi UTfrog. Yes, Finrod is indeed having a rough time of it, but Eru's watching out for him. I'm glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.
