| Father Charlie did a pretty good job of explaining things, but I personally would have gone back to the Fall, because without explaining Sin, the whole thing falls apart. ~Eruherdiriel Author Reply: Well, I didn't want to complicate things too much and he was explaining things based on the stained-glass windows in the church about the history of the Jews and their relationship with God or Eru, as Finrod would call Him. Besides, Father Charlie gave Finrod a bible to read so he would've learned about the Fall, something he already knew about actually because of his conversation with Andreth as described in the "Arthabeth Finrod ah Andreth". | Hah. When I read this: “Once, a long time ago,” Finrod replied, shaking his head, giving him a rueful look. “I am not a king any longer. I gave up my crown.” I was thinking of Phil 2:5-11 And the ending to the chapter simply clinched the notion... In a sense, Finrod's choice is a mirror... or a picture. Author Reply: Yes, that bible passage is fairly apropos to this chapter and you're right that Finrod choice is a mirror or perhaps a foreshadowing. Thanks for your thoughts on this. | Glad Daeron was there for Finrod, I think his news how much Glorfindel was always thinking of him helped him a bit. And the skating was fun. Waterly is certainly a much nicer priest than Peterson. He took time to explain things to Finrod, without the missionary undertone you’d get from some of his colleagues. After all these millennia, Finrod should know better than to challenge the Maiar that way, particularly when he knows they are around. Of course Fionwë couldn’t resist to prove him wrong straight away *lol* Waterly did a good job in trying to sum up thousands of years of history in a way Finrod could understand; it only got complicated when Fionwë joined in ;) That was an unexpected, but fun detail, who Gabriel truly was. And not only that one … Author Reply: Hi Kitty. Unlike Waverly, Peterson is neither a priest nor a minister, just an ordinary person with strong religious views. And I think Finrod enjoys challenging the Maiar at times just to see what they do. Certainly Fionwë enjoys tweaking him. I'm sure Father Waverly re-read the Bible with a new understanding of reality after meeting Fionwë. re-examining the parts of the Scriptures that relate to angels and their role in human history. | Poor Finrod. Feeling all at sea in the midst of snow. I loved the skating and the history lesson, but I don't quite think of the Valar as even close to an angel... Author Reply: And yet Tolkien himself said that they were archangels and the Maiar angels, Agape. I suppose it would be fair to say that the Valar (and Maiar) are not what we *think* of when talking about angels with their wings and all, and that certainly would be true. | I love this chapter, especially the second part. You have such a gift of putting 6000 years of history into a few paragraphs. Your story gives me the sense of Christmas back that I was sadly lacking this year. Thank you! I really like Father Waverly. He has Finrod pegged better than some of his elven friends. Fionwe showing up with wings was a hoot. Poor Father Waverly. It must have come quite as a shock that historic figures, nobody really can get their head around, suddenly show up and talk to you ;-). I was hard-pressed to figure out how to squeeze 6000 or so of history into a few short paragraphs but when I decided Waverly would give his history lesson via the church windows, it made things easier. And of course, being an outsider, he sees more clearly what is troubling Finrod than the other Elves. Fionwë is just a hoot, isn't he? And he is obviously having more fun than any Maia has the right to have. LOL! Thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated. | |

| I see that Finrod, as well as the Three Amigos were having fun skating. And obviously Gloria and Matt were having fun teaching him. *rolls eyes at Fionwë* That Maia clearly is something of a practical joker! | This was excellent. Love all the directions we are turning in this story. Loved the explanations that Father Charlie gave him. The visuals from the windows (granted mostly in my head but still) were a large plus. My church is across from the Catholic Church and when we go to Christmas eve services, the lights are on across the street, and those windows are gorgeous. Thank you again for sharing your gift with all of us :) Author Reply: Hi Laer. The Catholic Church I attend is very modern in architecture and has no stained-glass windows (actually no windows at all) but the church where I grew up had them and I can still see them in my mind and, of course, I have visited the old churches and cathedrals of Europe with their stained-glass windows. When the light streams through them, they are quite spectacular. Anyway, I'm glad you like the way the story is going and the way Father Charlie explained things to Finrod. | This chapter is perfect, it really impressed me. You should be imparting catechism. I like the idea of using the windows ans the church representations, it was, after all, the purpose to have them, to show illiterate people the bible. Maias with wings, I like them as angels, don't know why Finrod feel different. Well, he has a lot to think, a lot. Really like the little detail that christian priest has a Jewish housekeeper. I visited Jerusalem once, went to many biblical places and I remember that the church for the Holy Sepulchre (I think that's the name) is in custody by an Islamic family since the time of the Crusades, they gave the keys of the Church to them before the fall and the same family is still keeping the church, they opened every day, it could be so wonderful if we just respect each other religion. I was sick, so didn't review last chapter, just wanted to say that all my sympathies go to Glorfindel, I'm very partial to him, Still think that the Valinor elves are a little arrogants. Author Reply: Hi Fantasia. Sorry to hear you were sick and hope you are feeling better. There is much to be sympathetic about Glorfindel but I also have to feel sorry for Finrod thinking his gwador would actually be proud of him finding work on his own. I thought the detail of the priest having a Jewish housekeeper rather funny myself. I'm glad you picked up on it. What you say about the Muslim family being the caretakers for the church of the Holy Sepulchre just shows that God/Eru does indeed have a sense of humor. And you're right: it is too bad that we can't just respect each other's religion. Perhaps someday. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to review. I really appreciate it. | |

| Now--this WOULD be something new under Anor for Finrod to contemplate! Heh! A good lesson for the day after Epiphany! Now, which of the twenty was Finrod reading? A Morbid Taste for Bones, or the Sanctuary Sparrow? Or Brother Hirluin's Confession? We wonders, doesn't we? Gollum!
