Loved this, Dreamflower - how important our hobbits have become in the fate of Middle-earth. Watching Bilbo refusing to kill Gollum I was reminded of Gandalf's 'It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand......' A wonderful peek at anoth POV of our brave hobbit. When I watch the scene of Bilbo running out of Bag End I swear I can hear the first pebbles of the avalanche that will one day engulf Sauron. Author Reply: Absolutely! And I believe that Bilbo's mercy to Gollum was the pivotal event that actually set the avalanche off, slowly at first but gathering momentum. Because only mercy could have accomplished the Ring's eventual destruction.

What a neat little piece for this most important scene! Thank you, my dear. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: It is indeed probably the most important scene in the tale of the Ring Quest, for without Bilbo's decision to spare Gollum, none of the rest would have followed!

Lovely! It's like getting to see a little peek at the background, the blurry part behind the main scene, and yet with a richness and depth all its own. Thanks! Author Reply: Yes, just a little peek. I don't want to write the Valar in great detail, but they are always in the background and mustn't be discounted. And I think that singular act of Mercy on Bilbo's part is what decided Sauron's eventual defeat.

Yes, best that Morgoth and his fellows not know about these small folk who have the capacity to change the world in their own small way. Triumphant! Author Reply: Definitely a good idea to keep Men's "younger brothers" out of sight from the Bad GuysTM! I honestly think the moment that Bilbo spared Gollum as the defining moment of the struggle against Sauron. It was that instant which meant that Mercy would be the weapon used to bring the Dark Lord down, rather than swords.
