Number 24! LOL! (I wonder what became of the first 23?) So, not the Ruling Ring, it seems. No wonder it didn't have the hold on Bilbo that I expected. Author Reply: No. It's not. It still makes him invisible; it still extends his life to a certain extent, but it was never made to dominate! Pande has written an excellent story about Samaril--his backstory is that he was one of "Annatar's" apprentices during the era when rings were being experimented with. I was thrilled when she offered me the loan of him for this!

That is one of the funnier things I've read in a long time. The inscription reminds me of one of those little slips you find in the packing materials: "Inspected by number 32". And now that we see that this is one of the lesser rings, the use of the original, less ominous form of "riddles in the dark" in the prologue seems very appropriate. It will be fun to see where you go from here. Author Reply: Actually, that's sort of what I had in mind, that and that it's one of the practice rings, so Samaril made the twenty-fourth, LOL! Yes, I tried to leave hints that this ring wasn't as serious as the others, with Bilbo less reluctant to give it up and being OK with Frodo trying it on.

And there was Gandalf, getting his knickers in a twist over it being The One Ring! Huggs, Lynda Author Reply: Yup. He was SO SURE that's what it was--he was quite shocked to learn he was wrong!! *grin*
