The Time of Probing  by Larner 7 Review(s)

Dear Pippin, always trying to make the others smile - and it worked brilliantly!

It is good to see them all relax a little bit. Frodo is out of danger now, but time is moving on! The attendants of the Council have started to arrive already.

I wished we could give Frodo more time!

Author Reply: Pippin has perfect comedic timing, which can be such a blessed gift when there is such need to ease tension and anxiety. Yes, the attendants are there. I imagine that Bard's great grandson is there to represent his father as King of Dale, and we know that Legolas and Gimli were already there. And Boromir will arrive sometime in the night....

Unfortunately, Frodo isn't granted much time to recuperate now that at last he is out of immediate danger.

Thank you so very much, Andrea!

I have been reading this story avidly. Just wanted to point something out - According to the book, Shadowfax never came to Rivendel. "I could not ride among the rocks in the troll-fells, and shadowfax departed. I sent him back to his master" - these are the words of Gandalf at the council of Elrond. Later on, he reclaimed Shadowfax after his visit to Edoras with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. Not sure if you have overlooked this detail or this is slightly AU, which is perfectly fine.

Author Reply: I'd forgotten that Gandalf bade farewell to Shadowfax before they reached the valley, but have decided to let this stand as written. The noble beast might well have followed his chosen rider into the valley for a few days' rest, after all! Heh! I know that although they didn't attend the Council, Merry and Pippin still knew that Gandalf's horse had come from Rohan, so imagined that they'd seen him before he returned south without a rider.

So glad this story has found acceptance in spite of my small error. Thank you so for letting me know, Praveen.

Good to see Frodo getting better. I loved the scene with the horses.

Author Reply: I agree--long past time when he should be recovering, of course. And I loved working the horses and ponies into the tale one more time. Thank you so, Linda!

It's so great to see a chapter in which everyone can relax a little and feel better about things. They've still got a lot of trouble and pain ahead; but for the moment they can simply enjoy the knowledge that this particular crisis is over.

Author Reply: And you are so very right! How wonderful to think that the worst is over, although this is not the worst that Frodo shall face in the end. Thanks so very much, Dreamflower!

A pause before another storm moves in! Love the interaction with the animals. Thank you.

Author Reply: Yes, after all Frodo is only transitioning to the need to complete yet another, even more dangerous task after all. Not that the rest understand that as yet.

And loved being able to allow Bill, Shadowfax, Asfaloth, and Bilbo's pony (whom I'll always think of as Merrylegs a la Lindelea) a bit of exposure!

Thank you so!

It's lovely to imagine the hobbits bringing flowers to Frodo's room, and the air of ths sickroom filled with a gentle lullaby.

But this is my favorite line: "...it accepted its tribute with gentle dignity." Dear Asfaloth, what an important task he was assigned, and how bravely he carried it out.

Author Reply: The tension is over, and all are beginning to feel the effects of the stress they've now known for the last few weeks. Time to allow themselves to relax and to seek to bring beauty where there was fear. And don't we love all of the horses and ponies in LOTR? Bill and Asfaloth did such a wonderful job of seeing Frodo to safety!
