| An interesting POV! Tolkien would have liked it :-) Not only to men but also to the animals the orcs appear as intruders. And so the fox is as glad is the rangers that the ambush was successful. Author Reply: Considering that the one beast that definitely is named in Tolkien's writing besides horses and conies is the fox, I felt it only appropriate for the fox's POV to be reflected her, so I do hope that the Master would approve. | O but I love the fox, from start to finish! He has so much personality, and his thoughts (wordless though they may be) and actions stir the emotions. I found my fists clenching as I read of his desperate bravery, placing him between those horrid creatures and his family -- what could he do? (Perhaps lead them away, hoping to be able to escape, perhaps not.) I was guessing if it were Mirkwood Elves, through the first part -- it was a toss-up for me as to whether the jay was the alarm-cry of an Elf or Ranger. Let me guess, the shorter one was a youth? And thankfully his elders were more wary than he was? Masterfully done, and without a word of dialogue. Author Reply: Thanks so, Lindelea. I suspect that the shorter one was indeed a youth and relatively inexperienced. But surely each of them would make an error in judgment from time to time, which made them more responsible to their fellows as they watched out for one another as well as for themselves. Tolkien tended to include a fox or two, so I thought it only appropriate to tell this from the fox's POV. It was a good deal of fun, actually! Thanks so! | |
