Thain Peregrin I: the First Days  by Garnet Took 5 Review(s)
Grey WondererReviewed Chapter: 4 on 3/29/2014
Those three hobbits that came in to tell Pippin off certainly were rude! I do like the idea that Pippin could read minds though. lol I love hobbit gossip!
Another great chapter!

Author Reply: I wanted those three to be totally detestable. It would be interesting if he could read minds. I have him being gifted (cursed) with a high level of foretelling and I think if he'd had someone to work with him to develop latent talents, he'd have been able to at least sense hidden emotion and extent. I love toying with the Took Sight. I also plan for Pip and Regi to have a talk at some point and Regi to get a some education about the story of the faery wife.

From the start of the chapter, the writing pulls me into the scene. Pippin's wakening is almost poetic (though I'm sure it doesn't feel that way to him! ...having been dragged out of dreams myself this morning, earlier than usual)

Pippin opened his eyes to a world still cast in the shadows of waning night. He covered his face with his hands and rubbed at his sleep-fogged eyes. He gave a sigh as he let his hands fall back to his sides. Yesterday had been the stuff of dreams, today was his new reality. (I could go on quoting, but I won't.)

Horrors! Making early breakfast a more formal affair! Sure glad Pippin nipped that one in the bud. (Hope the servants took the hint, anyhow.)

Good to be prepared, and it showed in his dealings with the sheep farmers.

What are a few malcontents when you've skewered a troll, and probably stood behind the King for hours at a time listening to all sorts of discussions, I ask you?

And Regi makes me smile.

Author Reply: I'm grinning again just reading your review. Such encouraging things you say. :D

I'm glad my descriptive passages are working. That has been one of my weaknesses and I'm trying to do better.

I don't think first breakfast will become too formal, other than on Second Yule of course.

I'm sure Pip will give the farmer due consideration. I've just got to remember to include something about his decision.

As for the troublemakers, he's been pretty used to naysayers all his life. He knows they'd have just found other excuses if he hadn't provided them such easy ones with his being gone for a year and eveything else.

Thanks again for the review. Hope I can continue to live up to expectations.

There is so much to love about this chapter--the servants' shock at seeing Pippin at first breakfast; Regi's surprise at seeing him already at work; Pippin's dealings with the sheep farmers; and Pippin's skillful takedown of the malcontents. "Damaged goods"? "Reading MINDS?!?" Good grief!

But the most fun was his bantering with Regi afterwards.

Great chapter!

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Dreamflower. This and the other reviews had me grinning ear to ear. I was reading on the city bus and thought someone might question my almost giggling with joy.

Isn't it amazing the things the Tooks can dream up with just a little fuel for the imagination. I think if Pippin hadn't dealt with those idiot complainers, within the week someone whould have claimed they seen him flying or levitating something. :D

Glad you like the banter. I'm enjoying writing the dialogue between both Pippin and Regi and Pippin and Diamond.

Thanks again for the wonderful review.

He did well with the sheep farmers, and his reaction to the malcontents was lovely. As for Regi's curiosity about the faery wife--well, I love it, even if Regi finds himself wanting to strangle Pippin in return.

And I don't blame him for wishing he could talk to Merry and Pippin right now--he certainly deserves some good positive reassurance right now.

Author Reply: Glad the part with the farmers and those not happy with him worked. Whenever I write stuff like that I worry whether or not it works. I don't feel like I write serious, political type conversations well.

I promise Regi will at least get a crumb of information about the faery wife story. :)

Thanks for readying a reviewing. It is very much appreciated.

He could put up with the insults to himself, he’d been hearing them for years, but he was not taking having Aragorn’s character demeaned well.

I love that. One of my favorite parts of ROTK is when the hobbits return to the Shire and Pippin speaks in defense of Frodo.

Tooks have always been a discontented lot. They have curiosity and nosiness in large quantities and they have to exercise it somehow.

What a delightful summary of how the Tooks differ from other hobbits. Nicely done.

Author Reply: Thanks for the review, Shirebound.

I always have believed that Pippin was very tolerant of most things but he would not put up with anyone saying or doing anything that would hurt people he cared about in any way.

One of my favorite moments in ROTK is when Pippin stands up to the bullies in front of the closed Green Dragon. He really shows the person he has grown into at that moment and I think Frodo was very proud of him.

Tooks really are a different breed from other hobbits. I really do believe that there was something in their ansestry that sets them apart from all the others. Maybe it's just the stronger Fallowhide strain, but I think there's something more to it.

Thanks again for the review and the complements. I'm so enjoying being back with the hobbits and hobbity writers.
