Immortal Friends  by jenolas 3 Review(s)

Ah, good story! Nice touch about Legolas being nervous about entering Elrond's study, and Elrond having already removed the shells out of concern for his Lothlorien and Mirkwood guests. Glorfindel's teasing seems so in-character, somehow.

Legolas and Tathar seem to have handled the spider incident very well, especially the part about saving some venom. I would have liked to see some resolution on the Man's body, though -- surely the elves didn't just leave it in the forest unburied? Returning it to the village would have been a very responsible - and compassionate - thing to do; or at least burning or burying it. (Thranduil could send a second party to do that - it doesn't have to be Tathar's party, since they obviously needed to get to the healers immediately.)

Thranduil's love and concern for his son and Tathar are very evident in this story.

P.S. I'm glad that I went back to read chapter 4 as a result of seeing some of the reviews. The description of the competition really filled a gap there. Nice work!

Author Reply: Thanks for taking the time to write a review ( and to reread the 'extended version of Chapter 4). I am pleased that you like the story so far. I think your comment about the Man's body is a fair one, and will redress the issue in the next part (using your idea of the Elves going back to bury him, if you do not object..it ties in well with a small scene I have in mind).

Ah, just A trip then – I was getting ahead of myself!

As always, I love the way you create a sense of magic. It really adds to the beauty and mystery of the elves in the way you describe Imladris as hidden from all but Elf kind. There’s a lovely softness and tranquillity about the place as well.

“Not always affectionately, I expect,” said Elrond lightly. LOL! I’d say he knows exactly what Thranduil has to say about him at times....

I really liked the little piece about Legolas being wary of entering Elrond’s study. After all, it hasn’t been long since his mother left and this is the place where she first became afflicted – it must have been a painful reminder to Legolas when he was told that this is where the meeting would be.

So, others too have noticed the deep friendship between Tathar and Legolas. And you just gotta love Glorfindel! Of course he knew very well what had happened with the archery contest and he just couldn’t resist teasing them!

I though there was something quite heartrending about the sorrow of the elves when they lament the shadow spreading across their land and destroying their beloved trees.

Yikes, spiders! Proof that darkness has entered Greenwood, at least. It is good to see that both Legolas and Tathar have developed a sense of maturity and responsibility - especially when Thranduil is so proud of them! – but it’s sad in a way that this is forced upon them and all of Thranduil’s people as their home begins to become more dangerous.

The end was interesting, when Legolas realises some of what the future may hold for him. Again it’s sad that he does not have the choices he might once have had but at least he realises that he does not want to cause pain to anyone, especially as he probably knows that this is exactly what he already may do to his father and best friend.

The final line was a lovely touch with the introduction of Greenwood’s new name and a clear understanding of the sad circumstances that led to this. Poor Thranduil, how hard it must be for him to watch his lands slowly be consumed by darkness.

See, no questions! I don’t why you thought I’d have any....;)

Author Reply: Is your last sentence not a (deliberate) question, Dot? (hehe). Anyway, thanks for your review, your comments are always welcome, and I am afraid there are dark days ahead for Mirkwood :(

jenolas,
What a good chapter. The descriptions of Rivendell were wonderful. I couldn't help but smile at Glorfindel's comments. Not much gets past him! I felt the sadness of the elves as they realized evil was reawakening. In my mind's eys I could see the mirky gloom taking over the southern regions and the contrast that it drew to the beauty of the untouched forest. And now...spiders! Quick thinking on Legolas's part to take the venom. That's a great detail! Very good flow to this chapter...it just ran smoothly. I'm ready for the next.....:>) Karen

Author Reply: As you can se, I am trying to keep the tory more in Greenwood ( now Mirkwood), ans show a few glimpses of how the shadow mhgt have affected al the Elves ther, not ust Legolas. Next part is still under construction :).
