And so the spell again takes hold of poor Freddy.

This is not looking too good for Freddy. He's not been able to eat since he stepped over that threshold. No, he didn't drop dead on the spot, but then Saruman said that a lingering death from starvation would be much more appropriate. If doing exercises with his hand turns out to be painful, getting the splints off right now will probably be more of a setback than progress. Frodo seems to have disappeared. Did he go with Sam already? That seems a little strange - I would have thought he'd be watching more closely. Robin seems to have caught something, but he's not in the position to do much for Freddy, and has his own troubles to worry about. If Frodo's gone, and soon to go through a hard period of his own, it looks to be up to Stella to find a way to break the spell. I am glad Stel and Rose and Marigold got a chance to have a proper goodbye. Much better to have a loving and heartfelt hug than a strained leavetaking. It goes well with the lovely hobbit custom of singing away the coach. Author Reply: You are very perceptive and spot-on in your comments. Frodo wasn't in the picture in this chapter because he and Freddy kept missing each other. You'll see more of him in the next chapter. Estella's friendship with Rose would help explain the Gamgees' annual visit to Buckland, wouldn't it? I will have to go back and do a little revising in "Jewels", I think, to reflect their earlier friendship, although it probably cools a bit while they are parted, before Sam is elected to Mayor, simply because of the difficulty the difference in their classes presents. And Rose's shyness in "Jewels" could be attributed to her attitude towards Merry rather than Estella. We'll see. Thanks for reviewing!
