The problem of Hatto Hornblower is that he speaks before he thinks! Otherwise he never would have spoken in such a manner about Frodo, Merry and Pippin to their RELATIVES. But I think he has changed his mind after all he heard from Fredegar about what really happened. In that respect he is not like some other hobbits who simply ignore the outside world. What Saruman did to Hatto's fields is unbelievable! A "fertilizer" to experiment with, but without instructions how to use it. Without the help of Galadriel's gift Hatto's fields would have stayed poisoned for who knows how long. Author Reply: And I am certain you are right. We know from the Master's own writing that once he took over from Lotho, Saruman was deliberately pumping out poisons into the atmosphere and water in hopes of destroying the Shire hopefully before Frodo could arrive to see things reversed. That he might already offering "advice" that in the long run would cause long-term damage is likely, I think. And you are certainly right that he speaks before engaging his brain! It's fun to imagine how some people began realizing that their ideas aren't exactly right, much less charitable. Heh!

How painful it must be for Freddy to know what he does, and hear the Travellers dismissed so lightly by those who know so little. His explanations were just wonderful. Author Reply: I so agree, Shirebound. Thank you!

Once more another thoughtless hobbit learns the truth about the ones he's disdained. It always amazes me that there are those who will feel free to put someone down in front of their close friends and kin. I can just imagine the look Esme gave that presumptuous Hornblower! Author Reply: It's not easy giving up old perceptions, I fear, and Hatto has a good deal to learn still. And I bet that the reactions of the Brandybucks did make him feel small! Thanks so, Dreamflower.
