I love this so much. What a wonderful way to view this shirt, and Gandalf's words.

Oh, but how profound! Yes!

I hadn't thought of that before - what Saruman's hateful stroke must have looked like and felt like. Surprising in a way that Frodo allowed them to help and allowing them to see the other scars but I am glad he did. A worthy gift indeed Bilbo gave him. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

I think of how many times this bit of treasure saved Frodo's life--it was worth the price of the Shire, of all of the free world. Yes, indeed! I completely agree. Author Reply: Thank you! I could just see Merry understanding the true meaning of Gandalf's words at that point.

Oh, I hadn't really thought about that quote further, knowing that Mithril was rare, but I think Merry (or you ;)) is on to something here. When you look at it like that, the Mithril shirt was indeed worth so much more than mere money - nothing less than the freedom of Middle-earth from a great evil and many thousand lives. And that's something that can't ever be paid for with money. Author Reply: Exactly. And knowing who and what Gandalf was, I don't think the price he'd put on it would be a material price, although I am sure that was great as well. But it would not be the most important thing to Gandalf--nor to Frodo's cousins.

Oh, yes, definitely. Gandalf had the right of it. Author Reply: He certainly did.
