Finally I've read the first chapter of this! Now, I await the last ones. So, that was how he was injured. Bless those who found and cared for him and saw him well again. I found myself seeing the landscape as he shadowed the orcs. Author Reply: I'm a little late replying here, but thank you dear! I've found over the years that I am getting more detailed in describing settings, which I can think is only a good thing!

I might be a little late to raise this issue, but in the story that Berilac told in In the Court of the High King the Ranger was "Dirluin son of Hirluin". Is this an intentional turnaround to demonstrate how stories get churned up in the telling, or a mistake? Author Reply: I've been meaning for ages to answer this with a "Thank You!" You are absolutely right, and it was a mistake. I decided to do the ret-conning in the other story, where the name's used merely in passing a couple of times, rather than in this one where I've used it frequently. So now the stories match. A good lesson for me not to rely on memory, even when concerning my OWN stories, LOL! Again, thank you very much. It's never too late to call me on an error, though some are not so easily fixable!

I always like a story that is set in regions the books don't tell us much about, like the lands to the North of the Shire here. This first chapter flows very well and I enjoy, as always, your elegant prose. How interesting that the dwarves should make telescopes! Author Reply: Thanks! This is a part of the Shire I've not used much, so it is fun to imagine what it's like. The spyglasses made by Dwarves and occasionally found in use by other peoples is a bit of fanon that I've put to use before. It seems like the sort of thing Dwarves might come up with that would be a handy item for trade.

I agree with the other reviewer, this is getting scary! Knowing that this will be the "Battle of Greenfields", and recognizing the names of Bullroarer Took, and the name of the Goblin chief, I know that this should eventually end well for the Hobbits. The good part will be in seeing how you get them there! And, how will things turn out for our brave Ranger? This gives us a chance to fill in the gaps which our Good Professor left in his version of the tale. Author Reply: Yes, to one who knows the Tale of Years, this bit of Shire history is fairly well-known. I hope that you like how the story is turning out.

This is getting scary, and too near the Shire for comfort! I hope he gets to deliver his warning, and I hope somebody takes care of his wound, poor Hirluin. And Belan is such a brave and sweet horse, helping him get on his back when he is too sick to do so. But I hope somebody from among the Dunedain, or from Rivendell, comes to the rescue of the Shire!!! Author Reply: It's way too near the Shire! Hirluin gets his care, as you have seen. I must confess that Belan is partly inspired by Aragorn's horse in movie-verse, who seemed a remarkably intelligent and brave horse. I think you may be surprised at how the Shire is rescued!

Oooh, I like it! I'll be waiting eagerly for Part II. Author Reply: I'm woefully behind in answering my reviews here! Thanks, dear! ((hugs))
