You are one of the most talented writers of LOTR fanfiction. This was a most delightful story! I don't think Legolas or anyone would have felt they should have been able to save Gandalf. Why? Because they were being pursued by a Balrog, a Maia, equal in strength to Gandalf, and far beyond anything the rest of them could have fought. It was certain the Balrog would overtake them and destroy them, so Gandalf knew he, and he alone, had to fight it. Only Gandalf had any hope of delaying the Balrog so the others could escape. It was a careless mistake of his, in his exhausted state, to turn his back on the falling Balrog. Had the Balrog's whip not reached Gandalf and pulled him down, it is likely he would have escaped with the rest. Thus, he had to continue to fight the Balrog all the way down to the bottom of Moria, then up the endless stairs to the top of the mountain where he finally killed it, and then died himself. The Valar sent him back to his weak body. Gwaihir found him and carried him to Lothlorien for a full recovery so he could complete his mission.

How sweet! That was awfully nice of Gimli, though I can imagine him not wanting to seem too very benevolent at the same time. Dwarf dignity is a prickly thing! Author Reply: I agree! Thanks for the feedback.
