The Tale of Arwen and Aragorn  by Morwen Tindomerel 1 Review(s)
Amy EarlsReviewed Chapter: 1 on 11/2/2003
Morwen,

This fic is lovely! I think that you've posted it elsewhere earlier, like many of your other fics, but I esp. appreciate it after reading so many really bad Aragorn/Arwen fics. It may be AU, but it's a logically consistent AU and close to the mark on the details that really matter.

I really like:

Arwen's and Aragorn's favorite trees!

your characterizations of Elrond and Aragorn.

the way that you've dealt with the mortality and time issue (Heirs fostered in Rivendell falling in love w/Arwen; Arwen dealing with Aragorn's young age but limited life span compared to hers), always terribly challenging in Tolkien

Elrond's puzzling at Aragorn's being distracted at the prospect of a throne to offer Arwen! And yes, I agree that Arwen would have said that she didn't care about his prospects, but Aragorn wouldn't have thought it suitable for her to live a Ranger life.

Aragorn's having grown up knowing his heritage, and Elrond's revelation about the prophecy that he could claim the kingship. Aragorn meeting Arwen immediately after learning that he has "prospects" and something potentially tangible to offer a woman not used to the Ranger life was no coincidence, and his determination to take up his Ranger responsibilities and do all that he can towards his destiny seems very plausible. And his doing it for love, rather than wanting to be king, is v. true to Tolkien's thoughts about only someone who doesn't want to be king is suited to the job.

Elrond having foreseen the relationship between Arwen and Aragorn, despite sending her away before Aragorn arrives.

Aragorn telling Elrond about his hopes for the future, and Elrond's saying that he couldn't object to Aragorn's family or upbringing (lol!)

Aragorn saying that the choice is not his or Elrond's, but Arwen's.

I like Arwen in this, too, although I don't think she's quite wise or reflective enough; Tolkien doesn't give us a lot to work from, however. I like her falling in love, trying to deal with the emotions, wanting to laugh and cry.

As to other fics,
Are you going to continue your Beren/Luthien story?

And what about Thorongil and the Corsairs? Last I remember Ecthelion had just prophesied . . . I love the details in this fic, with the Gondorians using the royal address and being careful not to sit before Thorongil.

I also enjoyed The King's Folk and Boromir's return!

Author Reply: Now this is the kind of review and author loves to get - lot's of lovely detail! Thank you!!

Arwen is still very immature in 'Falling in Love'. Basically she's lived her three thousand odd years as a child, enjoying the protection of her father and grandparents. She's going to start growing up now, and very rapidly as she becomes involved in the swift flow of time outside Rivendell and Lorien. Compare the Arwen we meet briefly in "Rangers of The North" notice any change? (I certainly hope so!)

Speaking of Rangers, darn that Battle of Umbar! I'm basically waiting for inspiration, (ie: a good first line) to strike, after that it should start flowing - I hope!

Then I'll have to get back to Beren and Luthien, since without them there wouldn't be any Aragorn and Arwen!
