| Count on Rose to know her Sam. This was so well done and a really wonderful take on the "When does Rose get her first hints of just had happened out there and her and Sam come to an understanding" questions. I'd think of all the shocks, the biggest would be hearing Gollum following them. That Gollum was real? That would shake her core I'd think. Until she heard the last part that is. Love how it was her good old Hobbit sense triggered by Sam's sobs that told her what to do. Merry finding them and knowing his friend was in the very best of hands is just perfection. | I love Merry's reaction. But then he is respectful and discreet, and can recognize that Sam is in the best of hands for the moment. Yes, Sam does need to know not all in the Shire has changed for the worse! Excellent! | I absolutely love this. Rosie has become for Sam what Sam had become for Frodo -- an absolute rock, someone to trust, someone who would always be there without question. I know that Sam Gamgee doesn’t get ‘caught up’ in anything he doesn’t want to be caught up in, and I never once thought they were dead. Not if Sam had any say in it. *grins* This is wonderful. Author Reply: Yay! Thank you. :-) Of course Rosie must have had a lot to do with Sam's working through all they'd seen and been through, and I've always wondered how these things might have been approached between them. | This is just such a beautiful story, I hardly know what to say. You do a tremendous job of capturing the characters - Sam as we see him in canon, and Rosie as I think she'd have to be for the role she plays to make sense. The result is a story that's poignant and charming in turns. I also think the psychology is very realistic. I can definitely relate to what it seems like Sam is feeling here - that you sometimes a traumatic experience doesn't really hit you until things are back to "normal," but you find that normal isn't what it used to be, and everything that whatever happened isn't something you can just leave behind. Random thought: this kind of reminds me of a scholarly article I once read that talked about how Eowyn's relationships with Aragorn and Faramir make a lot of sense if read in terms of the experiences of "war brides" during and after the World Wars (which Tolkien obviously would have seen many of). Continuing the parallel, that would make Rosie a woman whose sweetheart returned from a war as a rather scarred veteran. I think you portray that wonderfully here. Sam a lucky hobbit!
