Estel sat down to his first meal since babyhood in a structure built by Men. That really hit me. All the smells and seeing a young woman for the first time, all of it was new to him. I love his compassion and how he's torn between escaping and helping Ferrier, and how the people are kind as they can be. It's a pretty good introduction for Estel to the world of Men. I love his inner thoughts. Loving this tale! Author Reply: Poor kid is trying his best. It's hard trying to balance being good with being scared. :-( I suspect he's doing far better than I would have...

I liked the gritty reality of the scene in the inn. It must feel like another world to Estel. It's funny to think of him as Strider years down the road. The innkeeper and his niece felt quite alive--people who are as kind as they can afford to be but with problems of their own. Author Reply: Yes, Strider will be spending a lot of time in places like this! :-) And yes, poor Estel is feeling so lost right now -- the Men of Eriador are so different from Elves of any kind, which is all he knows... Well, if anyone from Rivendell comes this far they will have a clue to go by, at least. Too bad Ferrier is too far gone mentally to realize he needs to get physical help at the very least. And Estel could only try, after all. I am glad Kerra is willing to help the little she can. Author Reply: Yes, he can only do what he can do. He has no basis by which to know how Men will react to pretty much anything at this point, so it's all just guesswork for him.... Thanks for reading and commenting! :-)

I was drawn completely into this chapter and forgot for a moment that I wasn't in that inn with Estel! I'm enjoying this very much. Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so glad. :-) I'm enjoying it too... ;-) Thanks for reading and commenting!
