That was a rather rough introduction to "his own," not that Estel really knows it at the moment. Still, it was so beautifully written that Estel instinctively trusts Dorhaur and that he has better chances of getting home if he goes with him. And then another twist! Oh, but I hope Monday comes soon... Thank you so much for this beautiful story. I always look forward to the next "installment" and I can't wait to know what will happen next to Estel. I do wonder, though, where his Twin brothers, and Glorfindel, are and what they are doing. Not to mention Elrond and Gilraen... But since the story seems to be told from Estel's perspective, we may not know just yet. Maybe in some epilogues, or even a separate story later? (wink wink...hint, hint...) Author Reply: Thank you! The poor kid has already been through so much. But I'm a bit surprised that he hasn't already received training in hiding his own tracks and thus feel more certain about his ability to slip away and basically stay away, with Dorhaur knowing only he's likely to head east. At least he is indeed in the care of people of integrity, whether he and Darlo realize it or not. Author Reply: Oh, I think he's certain about his ability to stay away. He wouldn't even be planning this otherwise. :-) He's just maybe not as sure what chances he will have to actually duck out without attracting attention -- he doesn't know how good Dorhaur is, or how closely he'll be watched. At this point, though, he probably isn't sure about much of anything, whether it's something that falls in his wheelhouse or no ... Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Dorhaur is so very Ranger-ish! He's all toughness but mistrust, but his honor and principles shine through enough that Estel sees them, even though he's still cautious. Not a bad first introduction to the Dunedain and Rangers for the kid. I like the fact that Estel makes his own decision about what happens next. I begin to believe that you were in fact taken from your home, wherever that may be.” Estel drew a long, shaky breath and remained still. After a moment, Dorhaur added, “It must be so. If you believe that the two of us can simply pick up and walk off into the wilds of Eriador for such a journey with nothing but my pack and a Hobbit’s picnic lunch, you couldn’t possibly have survived on your own for any length of time.” That made me laugh. Author Reply: It made me laugh too -- it's just the thing to completely offend a twelve-year-old proud of his survival skills ... :-P I like Dorhaur ... I wasn't quite sure what he would be like when I started writing him, and he just sort of filled in the blanks himself. That sense of humor I wasn't necessarily expecting. :-) Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

This story certainly has twists! By the end, Estel will have got a memorable introduction to the peoples and geography of Eriador. The reactions of the people he meets feel real, I can easily imagine that a ranger would have hard time believing his story. Certainly he should have been able to give the name of a village and recognize one of his own people! I wonder if Dorhaur is already suspecting something... probably not, he wouldn't have shaken Estel in that case. By the time they have reached Archet, Dorthaur must be really confused by Estel's ignorance concerning the dunedain. If Dorhaur still doesn't know who Estel is by the end of this journey, he is in for quite a surprise when the new chieftain comes back to his people! Author Reply: I think Dorhaur was just dealing with a panicked kid the quickest way he knew, regardless of who the kid actually is... :-P That said, yes, Estel is quite lucky that Dorhaur hasn't started asking about names places and such yet -- though that may well be coming. I like Dorhaur; what a serendipitous meeting. Poor Estel, so homesick and trying to keep his secret. And poor Gilraen, she must be a worried wreck by now! Author Reply: Yes, I suspect she is. And even after he's found, they'll have to actually get him home ... so she'll have to wait a while longer. :-( She'll probably never let him out of her sight again ... ;-P Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Wow! This is an excellent story and what a creative idea! Thank you so much for your wonderful writing. Your characters are very life-like and true to Tolkien and the OCs are a delight--especially the hobbits. I have to wonder just how mortified Elrond is going to be when he has to explain to the Dúnedain precisely how he came to lose the young chieftain whom he is supposed to be guarding so diligently. Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so glad you like it, I'm having a lot of fun with it. Poor Elrond. Fortunately there aren't (probably) that many Dunedain who actually know what's what, so hopefully he won't have too many of them to deal with. :-P You can guard against fire, flood, and foes, but it's hard to defend against a perfect storm of pure randomness ... I love the direction this story has turned (literally, in Estel's case). Maybe whatever captain he's planning to meet will be "in the know" and recognize Estel. I wonder how hot on the trail the twins and Glorfindel are? I can't imagine they're completely clueless, but perhaps frustrated at all the incongruous twists. Thanks for the update, and as I find myself now certainly over-invested in Estel's predicament, please hurry back! Author Reply: I'm so glad you're enjoying it! :-) Yes, I think Estel's family is probably a bit baffled by it all ... not the following part so much as the 'why he's all over the place' part.
