| I haven’t seen that version of Emma! At least, I don’t think I have. I saw a BBC version of Emma a couple decades ago, I think. I confess, her cluelessness made me wince, making it one of my least-favorite Austen stories. But now I may have to seek out the Paltrow version. Author Reply: True! Emma is a bit clueless and how she treated her friend, Miss Bates is terrible, but this version is pretty good and that scene is definitely fitting for my chapter! LOL! | Oh, Éowyn, how familiar is that odd-one-out feeling. I empathize. I have to say, Háldred made me chuckle a few times. And Théoden's brief thoughts of gelding (!). Hah. But more importantly, this: Théoden took a strand of his beloved niece’s reddish gold hair from behind her back and smoothly placed it on her shoulder. He could not have loved her more if she were his own child. She had such a kind heart, warm and intelligent. He was glad she was not an empty-headed ninny, cooing at every young Rider training at Edoras. “You will find your way, dearest daughter. I see it in your eyes.” You've done such a good job of showing her kind and warm heart and intelligence in this chapter. I can clearly see how she and Faramir are a match, where in the book, it didn't seem so obvious to me, so thank you for fleshing that out in a believable way. ((hugs)) Hope this finds you and yours well. Author Reply: Lindelea! Yeah! Sometimes I feel I have lived my whole life as the odd-one-out. So is Éowyn, so I can feel her pain. Did you see "Emma" done in 1996 with Gwynneth Paltrow as Emma. The reason I mention this is because there is a wonderful scene where Emma and Harriet are in a house of an elderly woman much like I imagine Holdlith's little home to be like. The scene where Éowyn and Cyneith is reminiscent of that scene in the movie. I definitely enjoyed writing about "Haldred and the Chicken" LOL! Yes! I imagine Théoden being VERY protective over Éowyn! | I do like the word "debristled"! What a lovely and loving relationship you show between Éowyn and Théoden. I've rather felt like 'the odd one out' for most of my life, so I sympathize with her! Éowyn's parting words for the lady, "Thank you for the fine cider and the good company", were so kind. Author Reply: Shirebound! So good to hear from you!! Yeah the word "debristled" just came to me as I was writing. I might have even made it up but it just fit for what I needed to say at the time! :-)) I think many of us (myself most definitely included) feel like the odd one out. I wanted to write this chapter to show how Eowyn got on with the common folk that lived in Edoras. How she came to be well thought of by them. In Two Towers when Theoden is leaving Meduseld and the people talk of who they would accept as leader, 'I said not Éomer,' answered Háma. 'And he is not the last. There is Éowyn, daughter of Éomund, his sister. She is fearless and high-hearted. All love her. Let her be as lord to the Eorlingas, while we are gone.' The people loved her. She was kind and gracious and well thought of. In this chapter I attempt to show one of the possible reasons why. Thanks for writing!
