| Oh, I laughed and laughed! Won't Elanor just find out what he'll chew and how much and how often! And won't Sam and Rose be in for a big surprise in every sense of the word! Well, Rose might not. She's a farmer's daughter and might note the paws, too. So funny and sweet! | |

| Hahahaha! Perfect ending. Reminds me of my mom wanting to name the new puppy (when I was 5) "Mittens" - he had enormous feet... Nubbin sounds like a cousin to the pup Pippin "owns" in Gondor for a time in some of my stories, who was loosely based on a large, shaggy pup (of a Giant breed) you used to know (though the personality fits more with the current shaggy pup, come to think of it). So many lovely touches! Sam, the "willing slave". "Right things to chew on" - ah, very wise. And somehow a hobbity proverb popped into mind: "As useless as an old boot outside o' Buckland!" Charcoal reminds me of a Blue Heeler we once owned, quite the enforcer. Recently, the (now-grown) wee hobbits told me he used to herd them to bed, nipping at their heels, when he thought it was high time for bedtime. Nor did he suffer fools (or foolishness) gladly. He was a stickler for under-control behavior. Sneezles around dogs! Excellent solution for Frodo not growing up with a canine best friend. Maybe they wouldn't have known that terriers are more likely to be hypoallergenic, like our last two furry family members. (Ah, but I miss Alsatian intelligence and sensitivity and Labrador playfulness and wit...) Sam holding the pup out at arm's length - very natural and real. And of course Farmer Cotton would have recognized the signs... Best to you and your furry contingent, and thanks for the smile today. Author Reply: Mittens would most likely have surprised her as Nubbin is likely to surprise Sam! How wonderful! Am not certain what breed Nubbin is, but is likely to be a herding breed if he came from the Green Hills region. I imagine him to be very furry, after all. Oh, but I love that proverb! How apropos! Perfect! Your blue heeler sounds indeed like Charcoal as I've imagined her. Our Prissy, the basis of my mom's kennel, had her own distinct ideas on child raising, and was constantly shaking her head as to our lack of discipline. I enjoyed writing this one so, and am so glad you appreciate it. As for your beloved former furry companion--how well I remember her and her "baby" seal. I was pleased that when Tilion's black and silver sister was adopted, her new family unwittingly made her your beloved's namesake! She has her momma's facial structure, and her daddy's tendency to make certain other creatures' faces, ears, noses, and eyes are kept clean. Love to all. | |

| It seems like Frodo would be a dog person. I really liked how you wrote Tom in this-- really sounds like Tom Cotton... the accent and all. Good to see you writing again. :) Author Reply: Oh, I am so glad you feel I have caught Tom's voice. How much he must have enjoyed his daughter's husband's rare signs of naivete! Had Frodo been brought up with dogs close about I suspect he might have turned out a dog person; but the signs are that he wasn't, so I had to think up plausible reasons why he might have been terrified for so long by Maggot's dogs. Heh! As for the lack of writing--the last four years were traumatic, particularly since I have always been devoted to the good of others. To see lies, greed, and self-absorption corrupting the White House and its primary supporters has been traumatic and disheartening. I am so glad that our current administration is the polar opposite to its predecessor! | |

| *huge grin* You know how much I love the idea of dogs at Bag End! What a delight for the family this one will be, and what a surprise when it starts to grow... and grow. This is a lucky pup to have found such a warm home; he'll certainly be well fed! I enjoyed this very much. Author Reply: Oh, yes--any animal under Sam's care will never want for food! And after the last story I posted, I had to do this one as a prequel. | |

| Hey, Larner, it appears that someone decided that your story collection would be a great place to sell shoes! =) Look at your story summary, and you'll find the link that the hacker posted. With that said, it'll be interesting to see how that puppy fares at Bag End! Is it going to end up the size of a Great Dane? It could be bigger than a grown hobbit if it does! =) Author Reply: I found I had to write a backstory for Nubbin as I depicted him in my last story, A Star's Light at Midnight. As one who's raised dogs, I love to imagine how people who don't know dogs learn such facts. As for the hacking it's not the first time nor likely the last. Thanks so! | |
