Author Reply: thanks! i think tolkien must have been very familiar with both milton (probably with distaste as an anglo catholic) and, as they call it, the 'satanic problem'. and of course the byron/shelley interpretation (satan as greek hero), which he would have hated. yet-- the parallel is so striking: feanor is an obvious foil for satan/morgoth, that it must be in conversation with the previous iterations of a 'rebellious figure' who leaves paradise: milton's satan, and shelley's prometheus. | |
