I loved all your work with the Elvish translations and the thought of the blackness being torn so that Earendil could look upon them. Fits beautifully with Sam and Frodo discussing the stars on their long trek across Mordor. The hobbits being there for one another as they encounter their first storm was beautiful. I especially liked the image of Merry and Pippin guarding each others backs. Well done and thanks for the read!

This was most excellent as usual. I love the elvish bits you put in with the names of the hobbits and how Gandalf had that introspection. The hobbits comforting each other was nice as well because they do need each other when nightmares abound. The quest really took a toll on them! Manwë sent his winds to tear apart the clouds over the Black Land when Eärendil soared over it. Several times he saw them so. Know this: what the Cormacolindo has endured has strengthened him beyond his realization, and has indeed removed most of his fears, save for his fear of hurting his beloved companion and those others he loves best. Love this line and thanks for letting us know what Cormacolindo is and i learned the Elvish for Ringbearer in this fic! Thank you.

Glad I read this one again. I saw it the other day and read it but didn't review. I really like this story. The imagery is wonderful. It seems that storms, especially at night can reawaken primal fears in even some of the strongest people I also love the images of the protected bien the protectors in this case. Frodo protecting Sam and Pippin helping Merry. A great way to show the the balance has shifted to equality for the four of them. The visit of the Maiar was a very nice moment as well. Great job all the way around. Author Reply: I answered this when you responded to the story, but I see it didn't take. Must have hit the wrong key. Am so glad you liked this. It was nice having Frodo comforting Sam for a change, and to shoe Pippin thinking of others first for a change. Am not sure when Osse and Uinen invited themselves into this story, but there it is. Trust the Maiar to slip now and then into a tale. Am so glad to hear from you!

My dear Larner, I rarely go here anymore but I happened by and saw this - I don't get story notifications anymore so I didn't know this was here and enjoyed this treat awaiting me, inspired perhaps by the heat wave Britain had last year? Nice to wallow in some hobbity love. :) Hope all is well as can be with you in this world that gets nuttier by the second. I am working on the second book of a fantasy series I started many moons ago, truly a tale that grows in the telling, and it will be entitled The Storm Breaks, so great minds must think alike. ;) Namarie, God bless and hobbity hugs, Antane :) Author Reply: Oh, yes, but they do, don't they? Am taking advantage of some real down-time to get some much needed extra sleep this weekend. But England wasn't the only place facing unprecedented heat last year--we've had two summers in a row where we didn't get our usual allotment of rain, and I didn't want my aquifer to run dry as the summer bore on. I look on the snowpack on the mountains with hope it's enough to keep us with water this coming year. Am glad that this story pleases! It's been on my mind for some time, and was glad to get it finished and posted at last. I was a bit surprised when Osse and Uinen made their apperances in the tale, but you know how pushy Maiar can be! Heh! Loved having Frodo comforting Sam for a change. Good luck with the books!

This is even better than you described it to me. I love the Maiar dancing in the storm, and Gandalf’s perceptions of the hobbits (your descriptions!). As I was reading, Monsieur le Perce jumped up beside me and began kneading and purring with all his might as if to reassure me that all would be well. He’s still at it, even now, a hint that “the children” should be in bed by now so that the Grand Old Man can enjoy the quiet of the house and then curl up behind my knees at the time of his choosing. (It is an unwritten law that adults must be the last to go to bed, and in feline years, he is now Eldest in the household.) I had better obey the hint before he decides that purring his feline lullaby is insufficient and must be supplemented by a sharp nip on the elbow… Thank you again for the lovely present. Author Reply: So glad you liked the final product. It takes me so much time to finish a story anymore, I find. Hopefully that will change when I get my Windows 7 computer back. Sam's updating it with a proper hard drive, so I'll be able to use my old email client and write and post more easily. Windows 11 has been too much of a challenge in some ways. Am putting in for vacation Easter Week. Need some time off in a big way. I may drop down to Meesh's next weekend for a couple of days, but that's to be decided. On this dark and stormy night, I discovered this story waiting to be read and suddenly there is sunshine in spite of the subject matter! As ever, you’ve told a beautiful, insightful story, and this one has an especially shivery but cozy feel. I heard, felt, even smelled that storm. I really love Gandalf’s part in this, the wordless exchange with Aragorn, the light and honestly humorous excuse he gave the council, humorous given his true nature… his interactions with the higher Powers and the way you portray them, beautiful visuals. I love his insights about the Hobbits also. Merry and Pippin comfort one another, and it’s a beautiful thing, but my favorite detail is that Frodo is Sam’s comforter in soft, subtle ways, even distracting Sam from his own terror a little by not pointing it out directly but asking for closeness for his own sake, although it’s really for Sam’s. Very discerning of ‘wise through experience’ Iorhael. In the midst of my third or fourth(???) reading of “The Acceptable Sacrifice,” I also enjoyed the nod to it in the wind rods. Oh, and I very much enjoyed the short scene with Legolas by the White Tree. So beautiful! I’m finding Legolas a tough nut to crack in my own current project, and your characterization here is just so lovely and I find it encouraging at the moment! I feel that you captured so much of Elvish nature in a brief glimpse… wonder and delight in nature and in a new experience even as nature’s violence utterly fails to touch him. I discovered a few days ago that two non-online friends are also lovers of your work. We were all so thrilled to learn that… and you have a tiny geographically united chapter of a fan club! I already pointed them in the direction of “Sacrifice,” and will be making sure they don’t miss this one. Now to check on our own resident (canine) jumpy storm-hater before bed… and pray it lets up tomorrow! Author Reply: Thanks for the detailed response! These make my day! It takes me much longer to finish stories than it ever did before, and I get so frustrated! I find I enjoy writing Legolas, and am certain he would have loved seeing this new tree find its proper place in the Court of the White Tree. How better to come to know this tree's nature than by standing by it in a storm, seeing how it handles a storm? I've been rereading "The Acceptable Sacrifice" as well, and am so glad that you noted that the wind rods from there are shown here. So soon after their various ordeals, this is how I see the various personalities seeking to comfort one another during an especially violent storm that is producing lightning and thunder so up-close and personally. With lightning strokes so close to them, striking the mountain just above the city would undoubtedly affect the Hobbits in particular, considering the topography of the Shire is more condicive to scattered lightning strikes about them rather than concentrated so closely to them. It was delightful to find a means for Frodo to comfort Sam for a change. Convey my greetings to your fellow fans. Tell them I am especially honored.

What a joy to read another of your insightful tales. My own Muse has apparently fled to far-off lands, but I still hope to be inspired to write once again. I greatly appreciate the evolution you show, acknowledged by the Powers, of Frodo's ability to soothe and comfort. Author Reply: For once Frodo deserves to give comfort to Sam, or so I've thought.
