I love Gandalf's compassion toward Bill, as well as Bill's constant concern for the safety of his Hobbits. And it appears that Gimli has more care for Bill than his father's companions had toward Merrylegs and his fellows. Author Reply: I love the framework the Professor provided for us to build upon, where one of Gandalf's talents (is that the right word?) is kindling courage and confidence in others. (Courage is right, at least, while confidence is a guess since I don't remember exactly how he described Gandalf's effect on people, like when he was walking through Minas Tirith during the siege.) Perhaps the company he's currently keeping is rubbing off on Gimli? It's possible that other Dwarves might look at him funny if he were to strike up a conversation with a pony, but he sees the other Walkers doing so all the time. :) Thanks!

What a gentle and lovely scene between Gandalf and Bill, in emotions and thoughts known only to themselves. Author Reply: Thank you! I aimed to portray Gandalf's wisdom and empathy in this moment between the two. Somehow, as the scene emerged, I could see in my mind's eye Ian McKellen's face superimposed over the Gandalf of my imagination (constructed as I read The Hobbit and LOTR as a teen), especially the scenes where he recognised mortal frailty, such as his confrontation with Bilbo in Bag End over leaving the Ring to Frodo, his quiet conversation with Frodo in Moria, his description of death while encouraging Pippin in Minas Tirith... He profoundly understands Bill's strength, which he honours, and weakness, which moves him to pity the pony even as he is resolving to do what he can to aid him, both now and after the upcoming and inevitable separation. I'm glad you're along on the journey, and I very much appreciate your stopping long enough to leave a good word.
