Destiny's Child  by Mirkwoodmaiden 4 Review(s)

They sat there peaceably working on the saddle and Éowyn lost track of all time until she realised with a start that it was time for her daily lessons in cooking. She jumped as if she were on a spring, gave Gamhelm a quick hug and ran up the slope to the Meduseld kitchens. She ran by a horse drinking trough, stuck her hands and quickly rubbed her hands together and tried to smooth back her hair by wetting it down. She had to try look at least presentable for Thilda hoping to fend off another lecture. She slipped in and stood next to Cyneith. Thilda, the cook turned around and saw two where there had been one previously. She looked at Éowyn and sighed, “So kind of you to join us, my lady Éowyn. What excuse you have for us this time?”

“Sorry, Thilda, I just lost track of time. I ask that you pardon me.”

Thilda pressed her lips together by way of reply and a faint “Mhmmmm!” was heard. “Aye, well.” She held her tongue mindful of the fact that her recalcitrant and unethusiastic student was the beloved niece of the king. “Today it is a basic lamb stew.”

[Aha, hemhem, and this is why she does not know how to cook? Lamb stew seems better than whatever she gave Aragorn. I guess you can’t make lamb stew while traveling, if she did know how to make it.
When she did give that stew to Aragorn, did she not give stew to everyone else? Or did they all know what it would be like and they passed too? LOL. If they all pass every single time Éowyn might realize what is wrong. As for Aragorn, he is a Ranger, he should be used to eating wierd things. Or did she not actually cook it all the way through?]

Hello! Eowyn knows some basics but never really being interested her efforts are indifferent at best. I see her as a tomboy not interested in girl stuff. In Two Towers extended Ed you will see Gimli begging off very quickly and Aragorn wishes not to give offense tries what looks to me undone and gobs of fat. Field cooking never is easy but Eowyn while meaning well, yeah well...

Thanks for reading and taking the time to write. I really appreciate it.

Not an easy thing to be anything but a hausfrau. I feel her impatience and frustration--it was sewing that was my nightmare. At least her cousin and brother are proud of her, and she is the light of Theoden's eye.

Exactly! Eowyn is always being told who she is supposed to be and it is not who she knows herself to be. It is very frustrating. But as you say she is encouraged and excels at what she is truly good and her family IS very proud. And yes, Theoden loves her like his own daughter!

Thanks for both reading and writing!

“My sister is smirking. That is never a good sign.” A very brotherly sentiment. The archery competition sounded quite real.

I love the song and storytelling time! It sounds so cosy!

Ah, Éowyn, cooking can be quite a valuable skill, and even scouts and warriors benefit from understanding how to combine various edibles and somehow end up with an edible result. But I can sympathise. I'm quite distractible, meaning I have burned too many dishes over the years, not to mention losing track of what I've added and either added something twice (too much salt is not a good thing) or forgot to add something. When I can bring myself to concentrate (and do not get interrupted), the results can sometimes impress even me.

(((hugs))) I am enjoying revisiting these early chapters, even though I know there is darkness to get through before Éowyn's story will brighten once more.

Yeah! I always want to show the brotherly and sisterly affection playful banter and behaviorthat exist between Eomer and Eowyn.

The Archery competition is a very real combination of competitions from university competitions that I shot in and the longbow competition we had in the renaissance Archery guild at Ren faires while I was a member!

Poor Eowyn! It is a combination of resistance to learning "womanly arts" and really having no skill in cooking. To Aragorn's misfortune in PJ's "Two Towers." LOL. Curiously in my story "The Heir Apparent" Elladan has a similar cooking disability...which gives Elrohir no end of Joy teasing him about. :-))

Yup! Eowyn's life is going to get significantly worse until it gets significantly better.

I think that is why the last two stories, my birthday mathom and my Winter Solstice story are about Eowyn when she was happy growing up!

I think it will probably be at least three chapters till she meets Faramir.

Thanks for writing!

You know … it is important to know how to cook…. It’s good that she has her training, but it’s also good that she is learning important things she doesn’t necessarily like, too. We can’t spend all our time only doing what we want (unfortunately). This will be a growth opportunity for her as well!

You are so right! But Eowyn is a stubborn little thing. And as we see in Two Towers when she offers Aragorn stew she didn't really apply herself to the art of cooking like she did with archery or swordsmanship! Or possibly she did and is just culinarily challenged! LOL Thanks for reading and writing once again!
