The Green Knight  by Le Rouret 6 Review(s)

I have always wondered what would happen if a MALE elf were to love a
female human. I do not believe Tolkien ever envisioned or wrote about such a
match. While Luthien and Arwen had to give up their immortality, I have often
wondered whether a MALE elf might have somehow maintained his immortality.
oh, well. Certainly, it seems fair that he should become mortal to wed his
mortal love.

Another wonderful chapter! The stifling atmosphere inside the healer's tent was well described and added wonderfully to the interrogation of Hallas of Lossarnach and his misery, along with the distant rolling of thunder and the sound of the rain.

But Hallas of Lossarnach is a poor fellow, indeed. To use the love of a poor knight for his lady in such a way and only to harm Lasgalen of Dale is outright mean! I do hope that Elessar and Faramir will catch the author of that note rather sooner than later, and I wonder what motives they will find once they uncover that intrigue.

And, of course, Legolas has not yet won the tournament, so I also hope for another round of interesting jousts.

Well this has definetely caught my attention.

I figured it was an elf when Eowyn noticed the Green Knight riding such a spirited steed without bit or bridle...took another post or two before I was completely certain that it was indeed Legolas, but I had the pleasure of cackling with pleasure at being right when he was revealed. I wondered if Aragorn would be pissed or just crack up laughing when he found out. LOL...seems it was the former.

But what is this new twist I see? Someone with a grudge against the Green Knight? My my...even as a 'man' Legolas can't stop making enimies. =P

The identity of this perpetrator will no doubt keep me guessing till you deem it proper to let us in on the secret.

MORE SOON PLEASE!

Author Reply: Dear Saber,

I'm glad you've hopped on the Green Knight's bandwagon. Welcome aboard! I promise, this won't be nearly as long and bumpy a ride as Ithilien's "The Hunting Trip." I don't have her brand of patience (or talent).

I'm trying to update once a week; with the holidays screaming behind me I may get a little behind (no pun intended, but that did make me think of overindulging on gingerbread men). I've already lapped my too-busy beta to such an extent I'll be altering chapters NEXT Christmas. Oh, well. But so long as you don't mind reading un-beta-ed work, by next Monday I should have the next installment ready.

Thanks for the review!

Oh our Green Knight has found himself the centre of yet another scandal!!! He *is* causing an uproar at the Tournament now isn't he....
Good that the misunderstanding has been cleared, though I feel so sorry for poor Hallas....
Thanks for yet another wonderful chapter...
:)

Author Reply: Hey, Tinnuial,

You think the mess with Hallas was bad, wait 'til you see what happens next!

Oooh, I'm having WAY too much fun with this.

Ah, this is a great chapter. I loved the description of the healer's tent being so hot and close -- so different from what we would hope a hospital would be.

So Legolas' secret is out. It's bound to spread eventually -- it's hard to keep a secret like that, especially when Hallas is bound to be teased in the local bars for losing his fight. Who could resist the chance to say "it wasn't my fault, I'd beat any Man, but that's an Elf!" But maybe he's impressionable enough that he'll resist temptation for a while. It'll be easier to do that if he's kept locked in the healer's tent, poor boy.

Amazing, I never thought I'd be sympathetic toward Hallas at all, but you've done a wonderful job portraying his perspective. Very, very well done.

Author Reply: Thanks, Lamiel, for your input! My beta was a little chary about my switching perspectives so often, but as I told her, "Hey, Tolkien did it; so can I!" Not that I'm up to the Great JRR's standards, but it's a convenient excuse.

It's getting harder and harder to keep Legolas under wraps. Maybe for Christmas I'll "unwrap" him!

Someone is playing a decidedly underhanded game here. I knew at once Legolas would never have written anything of the kind, and I'm glad he and Aragorn put it to rest so quickly. Hallas' reaction just goes to show again that no one can help liking Legolas once they meet him!

This whole episode reminded me of an instance in a book I read, "The Shadow of His Wings", about a German seminarian drafted into the Nazi army. When he was quartered in town, an old aunt in the house to which he was assigned asked him bluntly, "Are you a respectable person? There is a young lady of marriageable age in the house, and we want no wild ones here."
He just laughed and assured her, "Gnadiges Fraulein, have no fear. I am a seminarian, a Franciscan; I am not yet ordained a priest, but I am the same as one, despite this SS uniform. I have no interest in women, except as souls in need of salvation."

Every Gondorian beau can rest assured that Lasgalen of Dale will maintain a hands-off attitude toward their ladies. And I can see there will be words between Hallas and his intended that might not be pleasant. Someone's jerking her chain too; most spiteful of them. I hope whoever it is meets a sticky end.

Author Reply: "The Shadow of His Wings" sounds like an interesting book -- I'll Google it and see what I come up with. Thanks for the review -- one of the things that irritates me the most with fanfics (especially about Legolas) is how "romantic" everyone makes him. Tolkien never mentioned that he even noticed whether someone were male or female, and he seemed completely disinterested in women, despite modern fanfic writers' imaginations! I'm sure I'll disappoint a few Mary Sue Wannabees, but "I gotta be me."
