| It is surely difficult for Hobbits who have no exposure to such things to believe — but just moving out of the way will not do it. They will, as Bandobras warns, surely just follow. As little as Hobbits care for such things, more direct action will need to be taken… Author Reply: The problem is, they've lived in relative peace for so long... it hasn't made them soft and lazy, but it has made them complacent. I think even Bandobras had trouble believing the conclusion he reached after reviewing and piecing together all the information from his scouts' reports. I can only imagine the effect they would have on the Thain and any other Hobbits in earshot. Like Theoden, he is called to lead his people in a time of danger that is greater than his people ever saw.
