| What’re you planning on riding? That clumsy Oliphaunt behind you? Hah! This should be an entertaining race indeed. Author Reply: Very entertaining, I think! Nearly all the betters are working off of misinformation. Those betting against Friend think that horses, with their long, gangly-looking legs, aren't as efficient at running as ponies. And those betting in favor of Friend are thinking his long strides will be an advantage – but they don't know he just traveled 100 miles in 2 days, a grueling endeavor. But I think Bandobras has a sound strategy in mind, and he's just hoping that Friend can pull it off. | |

| Ha! Friend’s not going to let any pony beat him…. Bandobras, you’ve got this one in the bag! Author Reply: He'll certainly do his best! However, Friend has just completed a 100-mile journey in two days, making the matter not quite so simple as it may sound. While Bandobras has faith in the horse, he's also aware of the risk he's running. Nevertheless, he's desperate enough to make a wager he's not completely sure they can win. He's going to go for broke, though. His reputation for boldness (as in striking off the head of a goblin chief) is well-known (and well-deserved).
