Destiny's Child  by Mirkwoodmaiden 6 Review(s)

Beyond that she saw fear and trepidation in their eyes. Realizing that she could not let these people, her people down, she shoved her anger aside. There was no time to indulge in selfish emotion when so much needed doing. She said in a clear and what she hoped was a confident voice,
[My, she really sounds like Faramir. More and more every day. That must be why he likes her. And she likes him because he knows what it is like. Maybe. In your version anyway.]

He sprung to her side with the exuberance of youth, fist on heart and head bowed, “My lady, what is your need?” He was so young and yet he spoke with the voice of a Rider awaiting his superior’s orders. It made Éowyn sad that Háláf would have to grow up so quickly as he and his fellow apprentice riders would have to marshal the citizenry for the move. She saw resolve and determination in his eyes. Young though he was, she knew his heart and that he was ready to take on this responsibility.
[Oh boy. Then there is Helm’s Deep. He doesn’t go there, does he? And if he does, does he survive?]

She looked around and saw another apprentice Rider tasked with mustering the citizenry. “Elfwine! Come here!”
The youth approached fist on heart, “My lady!”
[…Little does she know yet that her nephew will be named that. But I suppose if you needed a name, sure. I was kind of tired of all her H. Riders. :). Little does Éomer know that yet either. But perhaps this Elfwine saves her or helps her enough for Éomer to hear it, and he names his son after him? Besides all the other reasons, of course.]

Her uncle and brother had ridden out earlier and Théodred rested with his kin under Simbelmynë
[so you skipped the movie funeral I take it?]

A fine steward I am!” Éowyn stated, then gave a tear soaked laugh. “I don’t know what I'm doing!”

“Pish! My lady!” Gamhelm countered, “Of course you do. You are doing exactly as you are needing to! Marshalling the young Riders, Giving comfort and guidance! You are doing splendidly. I’ve had young Riders in here telling me of your instruction
[Éowyn Faramir kindred spirits continued! Being a fine steward, I mean.]

Evacuating the people sounds like an overwhelming task, but I believe she's capable. Her shield-maiden training may even be an asset since she's got to be assessing dangers and possibilities and consequences. When you think about it further, it becomes clear that the people under her care are the very reason for the warriors to fight. They'd have a hollow victory if all their loved ones were dead when they returned from battle.

"She walked among her people..." the trust and acceptance in their response to her is built on a foundation she laid over time by walking among her people many times, always with their benefit in mind. So many details in this chapter attest to her diligence and knowledge and acknowledgment of each individual.

Poor Holdlith, will everything still be there when she returns, or will everything be destroyed while they're gone?

You do an excellent job of describing the urgent bustle of preparation.

Bless Gamhelm. Lovely person. There was no one else and You are doing splendidly! and, especially, Whatever you need of me! I am here!

I love it when I wake up to find a review! Thank you! I thought about it and that is why I said that the apprentice Riders were to remain in Edoras. She needed somebody to help organize the moving the citizenry. Quite an undertaking but she is up to it and the people already love her. They will follow her.

As I don't recall anywhere in Tolkien's writing that Edoras was invaded, it will remain untouched! Yay! I couldn't do that to Holdlith or Deor and Saeryth! :-)

I'm glad my portrayed the urgency and bustle was effective! Yay!

Also Eowyn needed someone she could talk to. Both Waerith and Holdlith could have sufficed as well. But she didn't have time for a sit down talk. And Gamhelm has always been her confidant going back to when she was eight years old. And has always loved her as a daughter. And she needed someone in whom she had absolute truth who could hold some sway with people that he also had known for years.

He realises that she is truly alone. Theodred having passed and both Theoden and Eomer off to do battle. He will always be there for her!

“Can’t have the place untidy. It wouldn’t do to come home to untidiness.”

That's so wonderfully optimistic. :)

True! True! Holdlith is engaging in positive projection, though she wouldn't call it that!

She is very good at this kind of organization and leadership. Even if she doesn’t enjoy it, she has gifts to make use of in these situations! I had never thought about how well she must have known so many of those packing up to make the journey - his story has done so well with giving them all faces and personalities…

Exactly. She is. She has very practical experience and has a lot compassion for her people. When Hama says "the people love her. She is high hearted, I thought she must have been among the people. And as a result she would know them and the problems they would face!

Thanks! I am having fun fleshing out some of the characters I have created. It has been fun!

Thanks for writing!

That was awesome!!! I love her stolidity, courage and determination. And I think that Gamhelm is my favorite character! Everyone needs someone like that in their life, who isn’t family but sees their special-ness and is there for them like that. I absolutely love him!

Thank you for the reading and reviewing! I really tried to show Eowyn leading but also reflect the relationship she has developed with the people. Empathy and Compassion. She is human and so much has happened to her in the last few days, both good and bad that I felt she needed to express to somebody what she was feeling. So of course she opens up to Gamhelm. Big, warm-hearted Gamhelm who has been healing bruises and strains both emotional and physical since she was 8-years old. You are right! I love Gamhelm as well!! Everyone needs someone like him in their corner. And it broke his heart to realise that Eowyn was truly alone now, aside from him! Hence the extra hug and tear dropping for his spirited and resilient daughter!

Thanks for writing! :-)

I hate that any of this is necessary. That this upheaval is being wrought upon us all. Good people shouldn’t have to think about this. Should not have to make these choices and live with whatever consequences might occur because of them.

I think about that whenever I hear about a hurricane or swift-moving fire or other disaster that changes lives with little to no warning.

Éowyn does a masterful job here. The gap you filled here is equally masterful.

Thank you for that. It means a great deal to me. I aim to show that Eowyn trying to fulfill the charge that Theoden has laid upon her though her heart repelled and it costing her a great deal to walk toward the cage she has always feared.

Author Reply: "her heart repelled" supposed to be "her heart rebelled" Sigh! Damn autocorrect...OK it was actually me but I am not going to full responsibility for my own typing errors. I am sure Autocorrect had something to do with it! LOL!! ;-D
