Legolas finds Beliond wanting to spout advise in his ears when he dosen't want to hear it, but finds he needed the advise with the battle of Orcs and Wargs...

Author Reply: Yes, I think Legolas can see Beliond's usefulness in this situation. Still, it must feel as if his father's along with him, not a fun thought.

This time it's not my fault - you posted more quickly than ususal!
What did Eilian say that was so bad? I don't remember anything said about the settlement that should upset Solith. I would think he was much more irate about putting Celuwen in the position he had, protecting Legolas over her home, rather than anything he said about the colony. Maybe Solith's pride is wounded and he wants to make Eilian crawl a little.

I like the growing comeraderie between Galelas and Eilian. Eilian clearly sees him as a younger brother he can look out for. Galelas is lucky to have a mentor in Eilian. He is obviously much more caring than Tinar. Maltanaur must have found Eilian's comments about young warriors hilarious. Like he had never noticed. I am glad big brother's spirits are beginning to lift.

Beliond is trying to share his wisdom with his young charge, unfortunately, the princeling doesn't want it. It does show that he cares for the young one. At work we never wish for something 'interesting' to happen. It always does and then you regret it. Kind of like finding a bunch of orcs in your forest. Galorion is very good at planning a strategy. It is unwise to follow them into the unknown. Uh Oh, an orc horn? I guess they have them since Legolas knew what they didn't sound like at Helm's Deep - good tie in.

Who was looking for more adventure? That will teach him. Tinar out of arrows first again? Seems to be a habit. I am glad Legolas checked with Beliond before leaping to the ground. Good job. Wait, what's this... A Cliffhanger?! You are not allowed to leave cliffies! That is for all those other, mean authors! Well at least you posted again quickly.

By the way - I liked "wroth." That's why I pointed it out and shared it with my husband. He had never heard it before either.

Author Reply: I think you have Solith nailed, TL. Throw in his conviction that Eilian will hurt his daughter and you have a nasty mix. I think Eilian's customary generosity of spirit shows in his care for Galelas. And as I recall, it's supposedly a Chinese curse to wish that someone will live in interesting times.

Your poor husband. He actually has to listen to stuff about my stories by proxy. My husband won't read them.

You can’t leave it there!! Anyway, sorry but this will have to be a quick one – it’s 9:40pm on Christmas Eve and I’m supposed to be heading out to Mass soon…but I didn’t want to leave this til after Christmas. I promise I'll read the next chapter as soon as possible!!

Thranduil seems to be making headway with the settlers. He’s obviously well used to having to negotiate with stubborn elves! He showed remarkable restraint with Solith, although I suspect that’s partly because he blames Eilian more than Solith for the current situation…

Eilian is happy! *hopes Thranduil won’t go and upset him* See, all he needs is a little freedom, some control and a bit of praise. O.k, so he thrives on the danger but this doesn’t seem as dangerous as some of his escapades. Hmmn. I’ll have to wait and see what you have up your sleeve, though! Galelas is coming on a lot, isn’t he? I really like the way you’ve kept it realistic, though and that he’s still struggling to make the effort. Ooh, and I love Maltanaur! I know I keep saying it, but he really does make me smile – he’s so good for Eilian!

Poor Legolas is never going to live down the incident with the spiders. I’m still dying to know what led Beliond to be so worried about arrogance in battle… I have to laugh, though, at Legolas thinking he’s a seasoned warrior now – I’m sure that would amuse the other members of his patrol!

Gotta run, I’m afraid. Have a great Christmas, and I hope Santa is good to you!:)

Author Reply: Thranduil and Eilian will have a little conversation about the settlement elves eventually but I have to get the border patrols out of danger first! I was so relieved to be able to write about happy Eilian again. Depressed Eilian is just unnatural. And when you tell me that I have made Galelas's improvement realistic, I am immensely flattered.

I hope your Christmas has been good. It's mid-afternoon on Christmas Eve here and my son has just come home, so things are good.

Great battle scene (except for the pre-mature ending) It was worth a second read. Seems like 6 elves ought to be able to quietly take out 5 unsuspecting orcs, some of the warriors in Legolas's patrol need some practice! Way to Legolas for taking down that warg with one shot. He may be irritated at Beliond's hovering, but at least he is listening.
Merry Christmas Daw, I hate to think you are spending your holidays with visions of cleaved orc heads dancing in your head, but our heros are in a rather tight spot...

Author Reply: You know, the cleaved head didn't bother me but the disembowelment kind of did. Call me an old softie.

I'm working on the completion of the battle scene right now. I'm hoping Beliond is happier after this one is over and he sees what the kid can do.

Merry Christmas right back at you, Camp.

A new chapter is a good Christmas present. Thank you.

Ok, I'm going to have to look back at Tide of Times to see what exactly Eilien said! I sure don't remember it being anything innapropriate! And if Eilien won't apologize in a letter, I seriously doubt he'll want to do it in person. Who would want to sit in front of Solith and watch him smirk at you while you tell him he was right, you were wrong, blah, blah, blah. I wish Thranduil would extend a little of this patience he's giving the settlement leaders towards his son. I've often wondered that so often we will bend over backwards for other people, but don't give any leeway to our families.

Watching Eilien and Galelas interact is really interesting. Soooooooo glad Galelas is turning out better than his brother. I really hope the patrols meet up. Obviously Legolas and his group need a little saving, but other than that I think it'll be fun for Eilien to see Legolas, for Legolas to see Galelas and for Galelas to see Tinar. I hope Galelas has to save Tinar's life or something, and I hope everyone else sees.

It's awesome that Maltanaur and Eilien are friends like they are. I smiled watching them just joke around.

I had thought Beliond and Legolas were making some progress after the spider fight, but apparently I was wrong. I am seeing Beliond's point ot view here though. What he's telling Legolas is important and it was fresh in his mind for the battle. (he hit the warg right where Beliond told him to. So where do you want to hit a warg to kill it?) It was kind of a cool touch how Legolas looked at Beliond right before they hit the ground. I've always liked reading about warriors fighting and protecting each other's backs at the same time.

Great chapter.

Tell the royal family Merry Christmas for me will you? You obviously have close access to them.

Author Reply: You are so right that Thranduil cuts his kids no slack at all. He and Eilian will eventually have a face to face meeting about this, and I hope they can come out of it a little happier with one another.

I am just writing about Galelas and his brother right now! I can't imagine what a pain it would be to have Tinar in a patrol to which I belonged. Galelas is lucky to get away from him.

Maltanaur is a character who has really grown on me. Thranduil sure chose wisely there.

I'll tell Thranduil and his sons that you wish them well. They're off making merry right now!

Great battle scene. I do hope the two patrol meet so that the two sets of brothers can interact. It would make for some good material, as would the two keepers' interactions. Lovely chapter, Lily

Author Reply: I'm glad you like the battle scene. They're a pain to write, I think. Bring the two patrols together? What a good idea!

Thanks Daw, ;-) What a wonderful cliffhanger:-) I like Beliond's swearing and Legolas being rather astounded. lol. I laughed at that part. I'm glad to see Eilian starting to actually enjoy his job. I think he is starting to realize that your job can be enjoyable (in his mind anyway) no matter where you are. I bet he really wants to get some wargs and orcs. But I wonder if Eilian and his group are going to save Legolas and his group from their peril? Hmmm, shall see I know:-D Great chapter. Namaarie!

Author Reply: Legolas was really impressed by Beliond's vocabulary! I think the young are often bowled over when those they think of as old and strict show their less conventional side. Eilian is happy and that makes me happy too. I hated writing about his depression.

You are so BAD! Get back here and finish this battle! Or better yet, let's see the battle Eilian's warriors are planning to fight in the morning. Eilian looks so happy and confident and cozy, perched up there in the tree with Maltanaur, basking in compliments of his leadership ability, feeling warm mentoring feelings toward Galelas, settling down for the night with stars above and battle-lust singing in his blood...can this last? Looks like a bad omen to me.
Thranduil sure is selling him short, too. The King is working so hard to deal respectfully with the settlers, who he thinks are misguided idiots; surely he can extend a tiny bit of respect to his own son. And Thranduil's been around long enough to know that there are two sides to everything!
Wonder what turned Beliond into a micro-managing pain in the rear, he's starting to sound like Thranduil. Maybe the royal messenger delivered a harshly-worded letter from the King after that last slip-up.
I loved the moment when Legolas makes his decision to leave the safety of the trees and join the ground battle.

Author Reply: Yesiree, nothing like a cliffhanger to get the reader's blood going.

Eilian is healing and I am so relieved. I hated it when he was sad. I'm afraid life isn't going to be all rosy for him for the next little while, but at least his shadow sickness is easing. And he's good for Galelas too.

I sweated over that battle scene, trying to keep my descriptions close in and have the characters react frequently, so I'm glad you liked it.

nanethReviewed Chapter: 8 on 12/23/2003
An evil cliffhanger just before Christmas? What a cruel author you have become! Wow, your description of the battle was awesome. I am always amazed that you feel nervous about writing these scenes when you do such a good job writing battle scenes. You always make me feel as though I'm in the middle of the action, experiencing the emotions of those involved.

What a delight to find, right in the midst of a battle, that Legolas noticed that the orcs were as cautious around him as they were around the seasoned warriors. And he took joy in that fact. It is so much fun to watch as he experiences all these new "things" in life.

I'm glad Eilian is feeling happy again. Now, send him over to take care of his baby brother! And update soon. This tension isn't good for my holiday spirits, you know!

A Merry Chirstmas to all!

Author Reply: The trouble with the battle scenes is that it's just too easy for them to be boring, at least to me. I have to keep going back over them to create emotional reactions in the characters and hopefully in the readers too. So thank you, naneth. I appreciate your compliment.

Eilian is on the move. Not to worry!

Have nice holiday. I'll pass your wishes on to the Thranduilions.

I wonder how successful Thranduil will be in getting Eilian to apologise? I'm glad to see that Eilian is looking happier again - is he getting over the effect of shadow, or is it the thought of killing orcs?

Beliond really needs to give Legolas some space - yes, he needs to learn, but there are better ways to do it! I do hope neither will be injured in this battle with the orcs and wargs.

I was re-reading one of your other stories a couple of days ago (where Legolas joins the Fellowship) and was pleased to see a couple of familiar faces there. Presumably they won't get killed!

Jay

Author Reply: Eilian is getting over the effects of the shadow although I suspect that the thought of killing orcs is making his little heart sing too. And Beliond needs to back off, just as you say. Assuming all goes well in this battle, maybe he'll let up. He must be close to a stroke by now.
