Grey And Pale Gold  by Kielle 7 Review(s)

I thought this was a wonderful story. You did a remarkable job capturing both the textures of daily life beyond Edoras, on the front, as it were, and your characters through simple actions and dialog that read clear and true. It is rare to find a story in with four main characters are each so well drawn. I'm not familiar with most of your work, but I'm going to seek it out, now.

This was a lovely, if melancholy, story. There was something almost Neil Gaiman-like about the tone of it. Your characterizations are very strong -- I particularly liked Éowyn and Théodred. The detail about Éowyn and the lice was cute, especially the image of this seven-year-old with her hair growing back all fuzzy. She really did strike me as a small child of around seven. Théodred was nice as well. He's a young warrior, still somewhat green and utterly confuzzled when dealing with children. I had not known the detail that he is double cousins with Éomer and Éowyn. Is this true fact, or did you make it up?

I must say that there was something that seemed not quite right about Éomer. I can't put my finger on chapter and verse exactly, but he didn't quite seem eleven years old, nor did he seem to be reacting to his last parent's death in the way that an eleven-year-old would. However, he was a strong character and fun to read about, so I will forgive him his oddities.

This is a wonderful depiction of what life in Rohan might have been like. I think your depiction of the tough and strong Eomer and Eowyn is wonderful, and Theodred is great. So much room to write more of their life. Well, must go wipe away my tears.

Perfect. That's really all I can say, as you've stolen my breath away. It's everything I ever wanted to say about Eomer being forced to grow up before his time; about his protective streak towards Eowyn; about Eowyn's warrior spirit; about their love for their parents; just anything in general about them that I've been struggling to put into words, you have just posted in the most perfect way.

Everything about Theodred was perfect, too. I've always been rather attached to him, but as I write mostly post-Ring, I haven't been able to give him his due, and you have just done so to my complete satisfaction. You have made him into the all around nice guy that I always wanted him to be.

And now you've gone and made my nose all stuffy again. That wasn't very nice. ;)

Lovely story! I like how Eowyn somehow knew she had to say good bye... I really like her relationship with her brother, and Theodred is very sweet, too.
I dont know if you plan to write more, but i would certainly love to read more of this!

Hi Kielle,

What a delightful story!

I especially like your Eowyn... she wants to appear fierce, but she is so afraid her mother will "leave" without her being able to say goodbye. How sad!

And Eomer seems like he has had to grow up too young. That bit about his father's body is absolutely heart-wrenching. He is so dedicated to protecting his sister!

I have a canon question about this passage:

"Your mother is my father's sister, and my mother was your father's. We're doubly cousins, you and I."

I know that Theodwyn was Theodred's sister, but is it canon that Elfhild is Eomund of Eastfold's sister? I haven't been able to find it in either RoTK appendix A or in Peoples of Middle-Earth. Can you point me to a source (probably in HoME)? (If it's not canon, you *certainly* have a sharp eye: the fact that Elfhild is also from Eastfold is buried pretty deeply in PME...)

The reason that I ask is that I am currently working on a genealogy of all of Tolkien's characters (with complete book citations), and would really hate to miss that tidbit if it's canon. (I already have that Eomund of Eastfold is a descendant of Brego's 3rd son Eofor.)

Anyway, thank you for the lovely story! Really hope to see more of your writing...

- Barbara

Lovely, just lovely. My heart's in my throat and I'm biting back tears. The style is spare and lean as the prairies the Rohirrim rule, and perfect. Thank you!
