| I think the most interesting element in this story is that Sam, although wishing his children to have the experience of Lembas, does not eat any himself. Elanor and Frodo-lad are too young to be able to remember the sensation, but he gives it to them anyway. Well, maybe they aren't, since Elvish things tend to work differently and I can imagine the feeling, if not the exact taste, staying with them as a memory. But Sam is not ready to go back there, certainly not now when the loss is so fresh. Probably never will be. Sam as Master of Bag End has a certain gravity to him, beyond the grief, that you capture well here. It's the inner wisdom, I think, that comes from seeing the world, surviving the experience, but even more from knowing deep inside what is truly important, and that he is up to any challenge, having faced and conquered the worst anyone could imagine. And the ending, although easy to forsee, is a lovely romantic scene. (I don't know if I've ready another story, by the way, where Goldi's hair is dark. It would set off the gems in a way blonde wouldn't.) It was lovely spending some time with a couple of your earlier stories tonight! | I read this a while back and thought I ought to leave a review! IMO this is one of your best fics (or at least it's one of my favorites)--a good extrapolation, and exquisite characterizations all around (my personal favorite bit is probably Sam going outside for a bit of alone time and Rose being, "Yeah, he's like that"). | Hi, I'm baack. I am working my way through your stories here from oldest to newest, and I am enjoying myself. The letters and situations in this story especially had me in tears. Sometimes in your stories when Aragorn and Gandalf interact with the Hobbits, the Hobbits come off more like children. But in this story I found the depiction of Merry, Sam and Pippin far more true to mature "men/hobbits" they are to my way of thinking. | I enjoyed this story. I liked the interaction among these hobbits. It seemed realistic. And I liked the way they reminisced about the quest. The ending was romantic and really lovely. | |
