| Okay, here's what caused the confusion: "Eglantine swept the hair away from her forehead, 'I had to leave for a small spell--I thought it was only a few minutes but I ended up talking to Essie about the sick lass. When I had returned, he I found him all bundled up under a pile of blankets--and in yet another quilt. He must have got up and grabbed every blanket in the wardrobe while I was out.' " It's in Chapter Six. Part of the probelm was I was reading fast, and I thought Essie read Esmie, which is a nickname peopel often use for Esmerelda. So that's where that came from. The other thing that confused me was I didn't realize that the girl was dead at this point. Maybe you said it earlier and I missed it. The thing with the names: Okay, this is only my impression, and I could be wrong. But I *think* that "Mister/Mr. Merry/Frodo/etc." is what a hobbit who is of a lower class, like Sam, might call one of the upper class adult hobbits. "Master Pippin/etc" is the same thing, only for a hobbit who is still a child. "Mr. Baggins/Took/etc." is without class distinction, and is just formal. So if Eglantine didn't know Frodo very well, she might call him "Mr. Baggins." Also, a child could call an adult "Mr. LastName." Also, it is an alternative to the "Mister/Mr." described above. Again, please remember that this is just impressions and guessing on my part, I'm not an expert. Maybe an etiquette book/website would know? Author Reply: Thank you very much for clearing that up--I was a bit confused myself. :-P I gathered the Mr./Miss/Mistress/Master thing had something to do with the classes, too, but you seem to be more on the uptake, though! | The end of this chapter seems, well, odd. First, because Eglantine says she just heard about the little girl, and the whole reason that she was out of the room for longer than she intended was because she was talking about the little girl with Esmerelda. Also, why is Eglantine calling Frodo "Mr. Frodo" ? Shouldn't she just call him "Frodo," or maybe, if you're being formal, "Mr. Baggins" ? Author Reply: Well...I did change the 'Mr. Frodo' to just 'Frodo' because Eglantine is not being formal. If she were being formal, or any other hobbit, would she/they not call him Mr. Frodo--or Mr. Baggins? Just as the other hobbits are referred to as Master Pippin, Mr. Took, or Mister Merry? I'm not being malicious, I sincerely want to know. If someone could help me out...I'm not seeing what ???? says is an odd ending, and I'd like the opportunity to fix it if it's not meshing. In Chapter 6, it is Merimas who sends Eglantine away to eat something. With ch. 6 or 7, I don't believe I ever mention that she talks to Esmeralda--I'm imagining that Eglantine is in the dining room and is talking to just about anybody. News travels fast in a small town as well as it could in Brandy Hall and it's very possible she learned of Salvia's death from anyone in the dining hall. But I have her specifically talking to Merimas on her return trip to Pippin's room. I'm going to comb it again... Help? This is what I want; I like this sort of feedback--I'm just sorry some folks end up being the test readers! | |
