This was going to get complicated. And he didn’t dare let Merry suspect that he was on to anything.
lol this is great. A conspiracy within a conspiracy ...i love it. :D

Author Reply: Yes, it was a conspiracy within a conspiracy--things got very complicated between our lads. Only too likely, of course, when people who do not normally keep secrets find themselves having to do so.

Your style of writing is so marvelous. I really enjoy how you are able to work the songs into the stories so seamlessly, just as Tolkien did.

Once again, you've captured Sam's personality and manner of speech perfectly. The interaction between Sam and Merry is excellent, as usual.

Merry is in full management mode - trying to spy on Frodo, handle Sam, and protect Pippin by keeping him in the dark. That Brandybuck is lucky he didn't worry himself into an early grave.

The great thing about this story is the tangled web you weave. It's like watching a game of chess and trying to keep track of all of the pieces and the dangers and offensive moves to be made by each. The interrelationships between the various pieces is just grand!

Author Reply: I'm glad you like the way I handle songs. This was the first time I did so, and wasn't sure how it would work.

I was beginning to get a handle on Sam's and Merry's relationship here. This scene kind of gave me the first inklings that perhaps they had been childhood friends when Frodo first came to Bag End.

Yes, for one who is usually pretty cheerful, Merry does worry a lot about things he can't control. Fortunately, his good hobbit-sense and intelligence most of the time brings him up short, and helps him get a handle on things

At this point in the story it was beginning to get hard to keep track of who knew what, LOL!

This is a wonderful story... I like how you include all five hobbits; the only time I've referred to Falco is in Merry's Decision--and it wasn't much. I also like how you've developed his character. lol...they all think that no one is onto any of them! Merry would have Freddie's guts for garders, eh? lol... I love a sassy Merry...and Pippin! :-) Take care.

Author Reply: I did get things a little complicated, didn't I? Let's see: Frodo knows Sam knows; Sam knows Merry knows; Merry knows Sam knows, and told Fatty, so Fatty knows; Fatty knows that Pippin knows, and Pippin knows that Merry, Fatty and Sam know; Folco knows nothing, but will go along with whatever Fatty wants; and Gandalf? What *doesn't* Gandalf know? 8-)

A wonderful start! I believe you made a mention to this in "When the King Comes Back", and I'm so glad you've started a story on it. I liked the idea you have about Pippin joining the conspiracy. Personally, I always thought that Pippin was involved in it from the beginning, or at least early on, but I think your idea works very well (possibly even better!). Please continue this soon :D

Author Reply: I could just imagine Merry in full "protective mode" conflicted about which of his cousins to protect and deciding to deal Pippin out ( for his own good, of course ) as if he could! And I had to wonder how Fatty came to fit in, yet Folco did not. It just evolved from there.
