A Conspiracy of Hobbits  by Dreamflower 6 Review(s)

Bless Eglantine for taking such a liking to Folco! He's such a sweet but misunderstood character, he needs someone to take him under her wing.

I am so impressed with Freddy and the courage he is developing in this story. Being in the centre of this maelstrom is forcing him to become his own hobbit and stand up for what he believes in. It makes it much easier to believe that he would lead a rebellion later on.

Wouldn't Frodo have brought any of his parents' possessions with him when he came to live at Bag End? You know, I always figured that Frodo knew or had a premonition about something going wrong with Gandalf when he was taken prisoner by Saruman. I'm so glad you included this.

Author Reply: I think that motherly Eglantine would see Folco's sweet nature behind his appalling lack of social sense, and rather take him under her wing.

He does have a lot of courage. I've always thought that JRRT may originally envisioned a larger role for Fredegar Bolger than what appeared in the final version.

Frodo was only 21 (human equivalent of a 13 year old) when he came to live with Bilbo, and Bag End was fully furnished. I think he was quite likely to have some of his parents' smaller possessions--maybe jewelry of his mother's, his parents' portraits, maybe some of his father's books or pipes--but he'd have had no need of, or way to take care of any of their larger household furnishings.

And I *did* think, as do you, that he would have had *some* kind of premonition about Gandalf--at any rate, I thought that part of the story needed highlighting. And Frodo's dreams in general, were canon.

I love the premonition dream you gave Frodo; very characteristic of him!

Author Reply: I'm glad people seem to like the dream. I was afraid it was too short and too vague, but I didn't want to go overboard, either.

It's wonderful to find such a great new (at least to me) fanfic author.

In this chapter, I was really struck by your detail of having Frodo store possessions at Brandy Hall; I don't think I've ever read that. Perfectly logical and in character -- as well as making the reader a little happier at Frodo's move, if there's more he *won't* lose to the S-B's.

The dream of Gandalf works well as one of Frodo's "true" dreams.

Author Reply: Yes, I am new. This is only my third story.
I did think it would be logical--and it made *me* happier. Frodo loses enough as it is. I thought I'd save a few things for him.
I'm glad you thought the dream worked well. I was afraid I had not put enough detail in it.

You've even managed to work one of Frodo's dreams into this story! My goodness, these feel like they're lost chapters of the books, they're so well written! I'm loving every word of this story. I must especially thank you for using Fredegar so much. He's always been a favourite of mine, and he never seems to get enough roles!

Author Reply: If you will check the date of the dream against the tale of years, Frodo's dream was the night Gandalf was taken by Saruman. I thought it deserved some sort of recognition.
As far as Fredegar goes, I think Tolkien must have initially had a bigger role for him in mind. I do not believe he was timid, which is a lot of people's take on him. If he were, Merry would never have brought him in on it. I think he did have a larger than usual piece of the hobbit-phobia about leaving the Shire, but would a timid hobbit have come to lead a group of rebels against the ruffians? I don't think so.

I'm really enjoying your version of the conspiracy. You have a good take on it and how everyone would be tiptoeing around each other - very convincing. I can actually seeing it happening very similar to this. I'll be looking forward to more.

Author Reply: Thank you. Yes, I do see all that "tip-toeing". It can't have been easy on any of them, knowing the danger involved, even if they'd yet to dream of the extent of it.

I still love this. I felt so badly for Pippin when he was telling his troubles to Fatty and I admired the way Fatty handled it all. Also am enjoying the fact that Pippin's mom has taken Falco under her wing. Now that is such a mother-thing to do, find someone who needs help fitting in and help them out! You have me intrigued with your answer to my other review, though about a story about Fatty and Falco that might be too sad?
Well, looking forward to more of this one.

Author Reply: I'm starting to get to the really hard and complicated part, as I get closer to the time when the conspiracy is revealed. I'm really nervous about getting it right, but it may take me longer to get new chapters up if I have a lot of checking to do.
