Did Aragorn really put a lizard in Mithrandir’s hat? God Bless! ~Szepilona10~ Author Reply: Yes, he did indeed! This was a mere anecdote, but I later on expanded it into a ficlet, along with the anecdote about Pippin getting Boromir out of the thorns, LOL! The ficlet about the lizard is "A Conspiracy of Comedy" and is number 27 in my "Twice Twenty" collection here on SoA. And Pippin and Boromir is "A Thorny Problem", number 36 in my "Dreamflower's Mathoms I" collection.

aww...what a fine reunion of old friends! Yay for Bergil. So cool that he came. I adore how you refer so tenderly to the friendship between Frodo and Aragorn. I have a special soft spot for that, and I love the mutual trust they have from afar. Author Reply: I just had to let Bergil come and see Pippin and his friends in the Shire, and get a chance to visit the Shire before the Ban was put in place. I do love their friendship as well--I think that in many ways, they were "brothers at heart" in much the same way Frodo was with his cousins and Sam. And they both know how trustworthy and honorable the other is.

Yes, the bonds of the Fellowship are unique. Author Reply: They are. In the time they travelled together, they became a family themselves, having their own set relationships with one another, and bonded by danger, and blood, and tears. It's not a blood relationship, which must seem odd to a hobbit, for whom kin is all, but it is just as strong. And in some things--stronger.

I could hug you for including Legolas and Gimli in this story! It's so grand to see the hobbits interacting with two of the other members of the Fellowship again. As Saradoc noted, they really do share that special bond with the other members of the Fellowship and fall into an easy way of talking to each other born out of such a strong friendship that it is like family. Particularly, I like how you show Legolas' sense of humour, which oft times can be lost in the more stilted language of the Elves. "...he was sure that any uncle of Pippin would take good care of him." I reckon Bergil hasn't heard about Uncle Clodio yet then, eh? lol! Author Reply: I could never have not included them. I knew right from the very start that those two and Bergil would be coming with the Men. They just had to. I could not bend canon enough to have Aragorn visit the Shire before Frodo leaves, but I had to let Legolas and Gimli have that opportunity to see their dear friends again. It has always been my opinion that as the Fellowship traveled together, they truly became a family, all of them bound together by their love for the four hobbits, who were the heart of the group, and most especially for Frodo, whose courage and sacrifice gripped them all. I do not believe time or distance ever severed that bond. snerk No, he's not heard about Uncle Clodio--yet!

"Bergil was excited. Targon had given permission for him to go home with the pheriannath. Amid a flurry of instructions to mind his manners, be respectful, behave himself usefully, eat well, dress warmly, and not be a nuisance, Targon and the others had bid him a fond farewell." LOL...that was too cute--admonishing a young page to mind his manners as if he were a son. Well done! This is indeed a new reckoning; I can see how your lovely Travelling Hobbits have all grown. On to the next chapter... Pippinfan Author Reply: Well, while he's with them, Targon and the other Men are sort of acting as his parents. I figure the Gondorians, especially have always been like uncles to him. This is really a momentous thing for him. He will be away from all those he has come to know in a new place. No wonder he is excited.

I do love seeing the four hobbits and Legolas and Gimli through the eyes of others - Saradoc's reflections on the bond between them was wonderful, and Bergil's astonishment was delightful! You're capturing the awkwardness, awe and delight on all sides so perfectly - moments like Frodo and Sam being mortified at being bowed to, and the hobbits by the fire discussing Frodo's deeds are just wonderful. Everything just feels so natural it's like you were there taking notes! Author Reply: Thank you very much. We see so much of the relationship of the Fellowship from within that it sometimes helps to see what it might look like to an outsider. I am glad you are enjoying the story. I'm hoping to get back to updating it as soon as the rest of The Dare is up.

Finally managed to catch up on all of the chapters I missed! (Lousy exams - I had so much study to do!). I was certainly not disappointed by Aragorn's payment to Pippin! I doubt that Merry will ever let him forget about it! And I dread to think what Paladin's reaction will be :P And the gift to Sam for Rosie - simply beautiful! I really think you've written Bergil particularly well, especially considering the situation you've placed him in! I can just imagine the look on his face during that trip to the Hall! Looking forward to the next chapter :D (as always :P) Author Reply: I thought it was kind of a comment on the personalities of the two Kings, that Eomer notified Merry's family of his intent, while Aragorn went for the element of surprise. Of course, it was not that much of a surprise, considering how he feels about his hobbits. I'm glad that you are liking Bergil. He's going to play even more of a role than I originally envisioned. Chapter 11 is already up, but Chapter 12 is going in a whole 'nother direction than I thought it would. I may have to change the rating up a notch for it (description of a battle ). If my husband decides to paint the computer room this week it may be a while before I get it up. (Keeping my fingers crossed that he decides to wait another weekend.) I thank you for your reviews. I really look forward to seeing how people like what I'm doing, as in this story unlike my previous ones, I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants.

I like this chapter. I am like Saradoc and I can feel the friendship. I loved listening to the ladies try to figure out comfortable arrangements for everyone. Now, I am worried about Saradoc and all that money..... Author Reply: Since hobbits are such a peaceful people, they really are surprised by the strong feelings that can be forged by sharing danger and war. He is beginning to realize that "family" can apply to people who appear nowhere on the geneologies.
