Awright... 9 years overdue.. but after these first 15 chapters of this particular story i must say. Fantastic. It seems you have a real knack of telling stories in a lighthearted but penetrative way that makes one to just continue reading all the way through. As i learned from "It takes a Took" i really love the personification of the "sidecharacters" from the original books and how they come alive... Must stop now.. have more reading to do... // Slaintė/ Pe

It's just marvelous how much honor is being bestowed on these hobbits from the Men from Gondor. And okay, my heart melted at Aragorn referring to Frodo as the most honorable person in all the Kingdoms. And poor Pippin when remembering some of his events with the troll! It's interesting how their family is able to come more to terms with all they've been through because of these visitors... :-) Author Reply: The Men know there is absolutely no way to repay the debt they owe to the four hobbits--it's priceless. So all they can do is try to show their gratitude as best they can. I thought it might not be unrealistic for Pippin to have a flashback to that awful moment, when he heard his young friend recounting it. Sometimes it takes a third party, from outside, to help family members put changes in their loved ones into perspective. We so often take for granted the way we have always seen them that we can't always understand when they change.

Yes, nice indeed to see our fellows among friends, able to be soldiers again for the moment. Author Reply: They can be among comrades with whom they shared experiences that other hobbits will never understand.

"Looking at him, for the first time, Paladin felt a real pride in the way his son *looked*." Loved that picture!! :-) The scene of Pippin introducing his friends to his father is so touching! The way he makes a special comment about each one is exactly what I would imagine him doing! Pip is such a sweetie pie! Another great chapter! Pippinfan Author Reply: Yes, I always think that Pippin has a sweetness about his personality that comes from his caring so deeply about people. I see him as very loving towards others, and always looking for the best in people. And he has maintained his optimism in spite of all the horrors he saw.

It is easy to get sidetracked on the smaller details, but in the case of this story, it's not really an issue. It's the recovery of the Shire, which I think includes being able to see the smaller parts of the story that would otherwise get overlooked. Sam finally gets some of his own medicine here! It is too bad Frodo couldn't hear that exchange between Sam and Bergil, but I'm sure Merry and Pippin will waste no time in telling him about it. He better get used to it though, he's not going to be a working-class hobbit much longer. I'm glad Paladin's finally able to feel pride in his son and not just shock and wonderment as too how much he's grown. There's still a lot of healing to be done in that relationship. They didn't really get to resolve that much before Pippin left. And I doubt Paladin will like what Artamir and Adrahil will tell him about the battle. Author Reply: I'm glad you like the small details. They are some of my favorite parts. I just worry about them slowing the story down. Yes, I couldn't resist that little bit with Sam and Bergil. There's no way Merry and Pippin are going to miss out on telling Frodo about that! And of course, Bergil was perfectly correct. Paladin is indeed proud of Pippin, yet there is still so much he does not understand. To his credit, he *wants* to understand it now, whether it is pleasant or not. And, no, he's not going to be too thrilled with Adrahil's first hand account of the fight with the troll. But it is essential to his learning what Pippin has gone through to get where he is now. Thank you for your reviews; I really appreciate how they keep me going.
