Yes, splendid indeed. And Merry has his own intuitions this time will be different, does he? Well, he is twice great-grandson to the Old Took, after all! Author Reply: Yes, I know that some writers like to concentrate the Tookish insight on Pippin, but actually I believe there is canon evidence that all three of the cousins manifested it from time to time. Frodo, of course, is most obvious--though many writers think his prescience is merely Ring-induced, I do not agree. But both Merry and Pippin have flashes of foresight. All three of the cousins have prescient dreams in Tom Bombadil's house; and Merry has a rather strong and somewhat different reaction in the Barrow than the others. And Pippin has at least two canon occasions of prescience.

May I please hug little Merry-lad now? He is so adorable! I felt so bad for him (and for Frodo) when he thought that Frodo didn't love him anymore. How appropriate for Frodo and Merry to think of Gandalf in terms of fireworks and trolls. I daresay they will learn in due time that there is much more to the wizard then they first imagined. Author Reply: Please do give the little one a hug! He's such a sweetie, isn't he? I'm not sure if he *really* believed Frodo didn't love him, but at that age seperation is very difficult, and it had to make him wonder. Of course they will learn there is much more to Gandalf. But I thought it would be what would stick in young hobbit minds the most--fireworks and Bilbo's stories.

“Fireworks Gandalf?” “Troll Gandalf?” Love both of their reactions to Bilbo's news. Seems Bilbo's plans are coming along quite nicely. But then, there's Merry and the SBs to consider in all of this. LOL Trouble and adventure on the way along with a wizard! Author Reply: I tried to think what would stick out in the youngsters' minds when they heard who the mysterious guest was going to be. My thought is that Frodo might actually have had a chance to see some of the fireworks when he was little, while all Merry knows is Bilbo's stories. By the way, thank you very much for nominating "Conspiracy" for a MEFA; I hope that I can get back on yahoo soon and be able to check everything out! It sounds like a fun award.
