You know, Dreamflower, you could probably post your Mary Sue story here now! The administrators aren't nearly so strict about posting "falling-into-Middle-earth" stories are they used to be.

I'm sure it was. Too bad you're not allowed to post that story here! =)

Yes, this is their first exposure to Men, and it's a positive one. And in my Shire, actually, they do meet at least one more, in about twenty-six years, in "Life of a Bard".

Better make that two more--don't forget the toddler, Mary Sue! =)

Author Reply: LOL! Well, little Mary Sue was an AU, so I don't count that in the timeline. But it was an awful lot of fun to write it.

Too bad that when it came they couldn't just give all over to simply enjoying the adventure.

Author Reply: It was a shame! But I think the seeds of adventuring were already there for them--letting them enjoy the adventure was one reason I decided to write "Eucatastrophe: The Return".

"Merry could not sit still for worrying."

He'd better get used to worrying since he tends to do a lot of it! lol!

I'm glad the bed arrived before Gandalf did so he can enjoy a full-sized bed. He will be so surprised by the room and the bed!

So now Frodo and Merry know that there are some nice Men in the world. I wonder if they meet any more before they go on the Quest.

Author Reply: Yes, here we see an early indication of another of his character traits, LOL!

I think you will be pleased with Gandalf's reaction.

I always enjoy the little nods to the quest that are in stories. merry saying they would go to Bree and Frodo knowing it would be so was very well placed. I loved how Merry was worried about giants, but became calm with the big folk once Bilbo had his say.

Author Reply: I like to put in a little foreshadowing of the Quest myself. Foreshadowing was something JRRT was so good at.

Yes, the sight of their adult calmly talking with these huge creatures as an equal would definitely have had a calming effect on his lads.

You've done a wonderful job with Frodo's and Merry's reactions to the big folk. If I was Merry, encountering such big people for the first time, I'd be a little scared too.

Author Reply: Thank you. I try to keep in mind just how small a hobbit child would be. I mean, if the *adults* are halflings, then the children must be truly tiny. And meeting a full grown Man must have been intimidating, even if he was nice.
