Oh, this is so sweet and adorable! Just the logic of little children, too--they see the world from such a different perspective. I love that Frodo and Merry are all ready to commiserate with him, and he comes up all excited and proud to be "first"! Author Reply: I think Pippin's view of the world in general was always a bit different unless corrected. I figured that he might see being first as being the winner. Glad you liked it. At one point, this chapter was a stand alone story.

LOL! You know, at first I didn't really get the story. First every time? But then... Oh my gosh! :) Poor Pippin. He was only five anyway. Author Reply: I think at five, just getting to play makes you feel like you've won something. Pippin just misunderstood the difference between being the first and being the winner.

That was good for a chuckle! Good for Pip! I loved Frodo's consideration of young Merry's feelings. Fun description of trying to get a hoard of little ones enough under control to start the games. Sounds very true to life. I forgot to ask, how old is Merry in the previous chapter? If Pippin is old enough to be smoking a pipe, I figure this is soon before the Quest or not long after (seeing as Frodo is there). Author Reply: Merry is 38 at this point in time. Pippin is on birthday number 30, so this is post-quest and Frodo is still around. I like having Frodo around whenever possible. Oh, and look for a flash back with dear Bilbo. I can never resist including him.

It was as good as I remembered it being! LOL! I liked how you added the bit at the end to tie it all together, Can't wait to see what other tales Merry has to tell. Bravo! Author Reply: This will be a real hobbit-type story because hobbits love tales and this is going to be full of them. Glad you enjoyed this one again. After all, it was your birthday story and it is also what started this one out.

What a wonderful idea! I love stories that tell stories from another time at the same time.....I hope that makes since. How kinds of Sam to sit with Merry and keep him company. Looking forward to reading more! Thank you! Author Reply: I understand exactly what you mean. I think they are fun too because you get to see the characters at different ages and in different situations. It's several stories at once. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Oh my gosh!! LOL...this was fabulous!! Brilliant! Just like little Pippin to believe he was indeed the winner. I loved your turnabout; a child doesn't have to learn humiliation in losing a game...he can be just as happy for having his favorite cousins there supporting him. Loved this story, Grey Wonderer! Please say that there is more to come! (hint, hint!) Pippinfan Author Reply: Oh, there is more. You may be sick of birthdays by the time I finish this one. I suspect that Pippin might look at party games a bit differently until someone spoiled it and explained it to him. He does seem to have a different take on life in general. I think Frodo and Merry were very relieved not to have a crying child on their hands at that point.
