| Aragorn would do it, because they are hobbits - but going to war over the kidnapping of eight hobbits is a very extreme and incredibly PROMPT reaction. Did no-one suggest, 'hey, king, time for a bit of diplomacy before you involve the states of Gondor and Rohan in all out war'? Did no-one suggest, 'hey, king, let's check they're actually there first'? Did the evil empire not think that wearing clothes (of your own choice) and chattering in animal talk (aka foreign languages) is not a suggestion of intelligence? Still no matter - this makes a much better story. Author Reply: Well, the thought did cross my mind that there ought to be investigating and such... but then people keep telling me I write *long* and ought to keep the plot moving. My beta didn't like the "drowning" part, it didn't seem plausible to her that the hobbits would jump to that conclusion. I left it in anyhow, sometimes I'm stubborn as a Brandybuck. Aragorn might have gathered an army anyhow, because he'd confirmed that the King of Haragost was promulgating slavery and conquering neighbours, which doesn't fit in the Free Lands now that the Dark Lord has been thrown out. | |
