| Oh boy! Merry and Pippin up to something at the Party! I love your interaction with them--I could just picture Merry taking Pip on a piggyback ride to get out of the adult's earshot. And a nice little plot twist on seeing the Dwarves. Of course I know there was no mention of them at the party, and they had to be there,as Bilbo left with them, but I had never thought about Bilbo keeping them a secret! Nice bit of deduction! Author Reply: I'm not sure how secret they were, since people knew they were staying at Bag End, but it is odd that they weren't mentioned as being at the party. I could only assume they were preparing for their trip (and perhaps didn't want 144+ hobbits staring at them and talking about them all night!) It would also make it harder for Bilbo to sneak off, as everyone would undoubtedly notice the dwarves leaving. This is the biggest party the Shire's ever seen. Merry and Pippin would have been planning mischief for months. It would have been interesting to see what they would have done had it not been for the dwarves. | |
