A New Reckoning  by Dreamflower 9 Review(s)

Lovely calming here, and nice to see our lads able to get a race going!

Author Reply: Pippin would seek to take care of and calm Bergil, much as his friends had often done for him.

It might be annoying to be sent off on an errand in the middle of the night, but when you are young and have a new pony? Well...might as well make it fun!

Oh, liked this chapter a LOT!

I especially liked the bit with Pippin and Bergil. The idea of a young human sleeping with an older 'tweenaged' hobbit is an interesting one. I wish I'd had a hobbit for my children to sleep with, LOL. It'd be good for the children, and the hobbits *like* it. Someone right there to soothe their nighttime fears... I unfortunately as a mother was bad at that because I used to be really grumpy if I was awakened. Now I'm so used to being sleep-deprived that I often suffer insomnia and wake up wide awake at the drop of... whatever. My son often got up and went into his older sister's room if he couldn't sleep or had a nightmare, and no matter what they were like in the daytime with each other, she always kindly let him crawl in with her.

...I think I want my very own hobbit pile for my birthday... LOL

Author Reply: *sigh* Our own hobbit piles? That sounds ever so lovely and cozy!

And again, my apologies for being so late with my reply!

Oh, Sam and Rosie’s wedding soooo close! I can’t wait to read about it!

Good old Freddy! I knew he’d be part of the delegation. I think a year away from the Shire would do him good.

I really liked the idea of Pippin comforting Bergil from having nightmares. JRRT wrote him so tough that I really do tend to forget that he’s still a ten/eleven year old child.

Bracegirdle deserves a worse punishment than the Bankses for running away. I felt so sorry for Bergil - I seem to keep forgetting how young he is! What an aweful nightmare. Back to the more angsty chapters I see :P (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Author Reply: Bracegirdle has to face the consequences now, but I don't know that they'll be worse.

Bergil is eleven; a mature eleven, and probably closer in maturity to a hobbit in his or her late teens or early tweens, but still a very young lad after all.

A little light angst, mingled, and quickly comforted,is my usual preference.

I like Freddy's idea. I think he would do an excellent job and would enjoy meeting new people and seeing new places. I also thought it was very interestig to have Pippin comfort someone else with their bad dreams for a change. It also shows that the hobbits and the nine are not the only ones recovering from the things they have seen. Great chapter.

Author Reply: Yes, Freddy needs to get away from the Shire for a little while, and with his intelligence and amiable personality, he should excel as an envoy.

I think anyone at all who was in Minas Tirith during the Siege would be affected by all the horrid things that happened then, but most especially someone like Bergil who was close at hand to witness the some of the worst, and had loved ones caught up in it. And the worry about his father being charged as a traitor afterwards (since technically he left his post and disobeyed the Steward) must have been very nearly as bad as the Seige itself.

Only Sam would worry about leaving Frodo "all alone" while surrounded by relatives and friends. But Frodo's always alone in one way or another. And Sam's right, no one will really be able to understand that, except Merry and Pippin.

I hope Merry's nicer to Dago than he was to the Banks brothers. Not that Dago deserves it, but it won't look good if Dago comes back looking like he's already served his punishment! Pippin will keep him in check.

Author Reply: Only Sam, of course. And that is exactly the point. But Frodo's very busy right now, and does not have too much time for loneliness, at least not during the day.

Merry shouldn't have any problem with Dago. He doesn't have the history with them that he did with Pip's cousins. He'd been saving up those knees in the groins for *ten years*! Antici-paaa-tion! 8-) (By the way, I'm starting to think about working on the story of that incident--pen to paper, first, then computer.)

Freddy will make an excellent envoy - good thinking on his part. Courage is about doing things anyway, and he is good at that.

Poor little Bergil. Traumatic as all these events are for the adults, they must have been worse for the children. He must have been worried silly about his father. Pippin makes a really good job of looking after his 'cousin'.

Merry and Pippin are definitely the best people to send for Dago. Hobbits, but rather more suspicious and practical than most.

Good chapter!

Author Reply: Yes, I've been trying to aim Freddy in that direction since the story started.
I thought he'd make a good one.

Yes, Bergil has a number of things to give him nightmares, and he's far from home; the recent goings on with the Bankses probably triggered this off. Pippin is just trying to live up to Merry and Frodo, being a good older "cousin".

And well-armed and rather larger than most as well. 8-)
Thanks.

Ah, very satisfying, like a long drink of tea when suffering from a stuffed throat (believe me, I know what I'm talking about--good thing I can type and don't have to try to talk!).

Exciting, can't wait to see what happens next!

I love the little touches, and Bergil being Pippin's "cousin", and Freddy's little talk with Merry, and all...

You know I'm really going to have to start at the beginning and read the tale properly. Perhaps I can get some reading done today, seeing as how it's a "sick day".

Thanks!

Author Reply: I'm glad you are enjoying it, even if you are not feeling up to snuff.

Maybe it won't be so bad reading it from the inside out. My husband does that to books all the time. ( *I* can't, but what the hey,) He always reads the end and middle first, and then starts over at the beginning.

Hope you get to feeling better.

Yippie - I had thought some times before it would be a good thing for Freddy to go to Gondor. He needs some distraction and is more open-minded than many other Hobbits. It seems you can read my mind ;-)

And I'm glad they have caught Dago Bracegirdle! It is a good idea the Thain has send Merry and Pippin to escort him - they are able to handle him.

It is cute how Pippin cares for Bergil - no wonder the lad worshipped him so much!

Author Reply: I've been planning for Freddy to be part of the embassy for a long time, but he had to be able to overcome his phobia about leaving the Shire and crossing the River. I'm glad you like the idea. 8-)

Yes, Merry and Pippin will have no trouble at all handling Dago, who has come to understand that he is not nearly so clever as he thought.

Pippin is just trying to do for Bergil what Merry and Frodo always did for him.
