Gifts of Wood  by jenolas 11 Review(s)

I had forgotten that you have Christmas in the summer. Great job with the wintery aspects, then! I've never had a white Christmas either, coming from Texas, but at least it was cold. Sleet mostly, and the occasional ice-storm. And the contrast indoors was well-written too; I could even hear the roar of the fire in the background. (My dad insists on a real fireplace in our house. ^_^ None of those cheater gas logs.)

Author Reply: My grandmother also always had an open fire (which we all loved sitting near) because even though it does not snow in most of Australia in winter, it still gets very cold.

Cute story. Nice touch for Mithrandir deliver toys the elverd carved.

Author Reply: Thanks, I am glad you liked the idea for the toys.

Very sweet story. I love the plot, especially the competition between Gandalf and Thranduil. Great job!

Author Reply: Friendly rivalry at its best, between those two!

A wonderfully original way to reconcile the Santa Question! I had decided his elves weren't Elves at all, but Noegyth Nibin, the Petty Dwarves, but this is a clever way to see it too. Oh, boy, we'll have all kinds of fun when it's time to give my baby brother the story!

Author Reply: Thanks. I always loved telling stories to my children when they were young... little ones love such tales.

LOL! What a wonderful tale! I loved your descriptions of Mirkwood at Christmas, particularly the way the Hall was decorated to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. And poor Mithrandir out in the cold!

It’s such a lovely image of gifts left mysteriously in the surrounding villages – I could really almost believe that this is the origin of the stories of a white-haired old man leaving presents for children during the night… Then I think of those children waking up to carved Legolas’ and Thranduils and I get madly jealous!

This was such a heart-warming story – ooh, I’m all Christmassy now!:)

Author Reply: Perhaps you should ask "Santa" to bring you one, Dot... perhaps made to order, if you get my drift :)

I love how you wove a middle-earth story from this tale! Mithrandir is a perfect St. Nicholaus, the elves really did make toys, and the gate spell competition is a perfect Thranduil-Mithrandir sidelight.

Author Reply: Yes, all the elements were there just waiting to be set in a story.

A lovely response to the Yule challenge, jenolas. Warm and sweet. You have such a gift for description. I liked the miniature horse and the extremely miniature Thranduil on his throne. One thing though -- you never told us who actually carved the Legolas miniature! Did he carve it of himself? Or did one of his patrol members carve it to accompany Legolas' horse? :-)

LKK

Author Reply: Or maybe Thranduil joined in the fun, and carved a miniature of his son?

Aww...what a sweet little tale to start off the holiday season...
I liked Thranduil and Mithrandir's little competition regarding the gate spell too!
Thanks for posting this...

That's cute. The toys made by elves, and delivered by the guy with the beard...

Author Reply: I could not resist the plot bunny...

I read this when you posted it at the Yahoo list, Jenolas, and enjoyed it then. I liked it here again. It's clever and touching. And I was struck by the beautiful descriptions of winter in Mirkwood at the start. Nice story.

Author Reply: Coming from Australia, where Christmas (and most of the country in winter) has nothing to do with snow, I am glad my description rang true. Thanks.
