I got here from a recommendation by Marigold and I like the story very much. I like the fact that they are willing to use any means, no matter how unlikely, to help their patients rather than give up. Also I like the fact that this was before modern medicine and they relied on what they knew and as it is LOTR a little magic is always likely!

You convey the sense of helplessness and urgency very deftly. Who's to say that prayer doesn't help, too? BTW Are you going to post "Spring Fair" here at SOA? I love that story.

Uh, that sounds kind of lame, like some Old Wives' Tale. Then again, that's probably what you had in mind. Isn't it, Regina? Author Reply: Yes, because I originally wrote this for the online superstition challenge at HASA. It is in fact a real life superstition--I was told about it by my one client who is a ICU nurse & who does this very thing regularly when she's afraid a patient will die.
