A Simple Touch  by Gentle Hobbit 12 Review(s)
Queen GaladrielReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/14/2006
Beautiful! I'm glad to see Frodo learning to accept and be grateful for the comfort all would gladly give him, to see Sam learning how much he is loved by his dear master, and to see him responding to that love, so:

And so, as Strider came and quietly tucked newly warmed cloths under Frodo's clothing, Sam tenderly cradled his master close within the folds of his cloak.
And so gently, reverently, he touched Frodo's face and spoke softly of good memories.

Love it, love it! God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: I'm so glad you like this story. I loved writing this and have a soft spot for it. Frodo and Sam end up with such a rich and loving friendship after all they go through, and this story is perhaps one way it developed.

Thank you for your review!

Oh, GH, I love the way you describe the world as Frodo sensed it, all the sounds and touches and the comfort they gave him, the panic and fear of not being able to see, the heartbreaking scene where Sam tried to show Frodo the green elven stone. And isn't it so Sam to have qualms over comforting his master? I enjoyed this very much, GH, thank you for sharing it, and pardon me for only coming across this after such a long long time. :)

Author Reply: Dearest Illyria - I notice that I never responded to this review. I am so sorry! This is 10 months late, but "better late than never" as Sam would say, most likely.

Your review touched on all the core elements of the story as I saw it. Once again you go unerringly to the heart of the story. Thank you for your lovely words!

Oh, GentleHobbit, this was wonderful! I'm not sure what to say. Even as I felt bad for poor Frodo, I was envious of all the love and concern surrounding him. What a lucky hobbit he is to have such devoted, caring friends. And what lucky people we are to have you write such a snuggly story!

Author Reply: It was very snuggly, wasn't it! I enjoyed writing it very much.

I really liked this! I read it twice, and the second time was the charm...i really enjoyed this hurt/comfort story during the Flight to the Ford chapter... that's one of my favorite chapters from the book. =) I really enjoyed the fact that you didn't have Frodo passing out that much or in pain excessively ...and there was a good balance of interaction between everyone and description into Frodo's passing into the wraith world. The last part about Sam holding him was precious, precioussss indeed. =) Good job!
You should write more hurt/comfort ;)

Author Reply: I'm glad you felt that there was a balance both of h/c and of all characters' interaction! h/c can be overdone at times, and I didn't want to fall into that trap! (And I too am very fond of the ending with Sam holding Frodo.)

Oh that brought tears to my eyes. That was so sweet and gentle. I loved it. Good work, and great characterization! Everyone was spot on.

Author Reply: I'm so glad you liked it - thank you for your kind words!

What a lovely emotive story.

You have all of the characters spot on, but I have to claim a special place for Sam...so diffident and humble.

Beautifully written

Helen

Author Reply: Thank you! I am very fond of Sam, and he and his diffidence can teach a thing or two to many of those lordly folk that come later in the book!

This is a very beautiful story!! A real joy to read! I liked how you describe the characters. Very genuine.

Author Reply: I always try to write faithfully to canon, and so I am very happy to hear that you find the characters genuine. Thank you!

What a wonderful take on this part of the story. I love your Frodo. Spot on. I am in awe of how you bring out so much of the characters of each of his companions as well. So deftly, using conversation and scene and action. Simply wonderful.

Author Reply: Thank you! I tried to do all of those things and am very gratified to hear that you feel I succeeded!

Lovely little story. Poor Sam always afraid of putting himself forward, thinking of himself as a servant first and a friend last. I hope you write more like this one I really enjoyed it.

Author Reply: Dear Sam... Yes - I see this as a kind of precursor to Sam's greater confidence in offering his master comfort in Mordor.
