A Star Shines  by Rowan 9 Review(s)

Just recently I read one of your first Flotsam and Jetsam pieces, and put you on my notification list. This evening I am going back in time, if you will, and reading some of your earlier bits, which I have missed. This is, indeed, just the opposite of most of the stories I have read about Bilbo and Frodo's early meetings. Many of them do indeed have Drogo and Bilbo being friends who see a good bit of each other. But at the end of "The Hobbit" Tolkien wrote that most of Bilbo's relatives held him at cautious distance, except for some of his younger Took cousins, who were very fond of him. The Tooks had always been thought the adventurous, odd ones. I suspect that most of his Baggins cousins were much more conservative, and thought him not so respectable.
I like the way you set up hints that they are alike. When Frodo is frightened away from the pranks that got him known as the Rascal of Buckland, he sought refuge in just the kind of books Bilbo would read. And, since they think alike, of course they would both choose the same spot in which to hide away with a book. I can definitely see Bilbo speaking respectfully to a tween, or even to a small child, as if they were an adult, a person. Bilbo, after all, was respected by folks from many races. The star of Earindel is a perfect symbol for their meeting. 'A star shines upon,..." and a special star, indeed. Lovely!

Author Reply: Thank you! Even now, after being exposed to more of the conventions of most authors' fanfic versions of Frodo's life -- such as Bilbo being close friends with Drogo, and Frodo knowing Bilbo all his life -- I still see this as a viable take on it. And I'm glad someone is going back and reading it!

I never thought about it that way," I admitted.

"Well, I have," Bilbo said. "In fact, I have come to think that on that day when I sat down in your reading place, it was because I was looking for you, though I did not know it.

Oh, this is just fairy-dust and magic. So tender and yet with a serious note . .

Great job. May you always be inspired to write!

This is a very well written story. I don't believe I've seen a Frodo meeting Bilbo fic, or much less read one. I like that you used first person. It was very effective in portraying the events. I am looking forward to reading more of your writing.

Author Reply: Thank you, especially since this was my first LOTR fic (though not my first fic period), and therefore I have a certain fondness for it.

I've never wondered how Bilbo and Frodo first met before I read this. I just assumed that Frodo had grown up knowing his Uncle and that the entire Baggins family was a frequent vistor at Bag End. I throughly enjoyed your version and has giving me a new perpective as to how the two met. I hope you continue to write stories as good as this.

Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words. I guess I had always assumed the opposite, myself, mostly because of the distance between ag End and Buckland, and also because of my assumptions about the attitude of Drogo and the rest of the Baggins family toward to Bilbo. But either way can make for some good stories!

This is just perfect! I hope to see more of your work here.

Author Reply: Thanks! I do have a few other ideas, plus another completed story about
Frodo and Bilbo. I just need time to code it and post it!

I like this version of Frodo's and Bilbo's first meeting. I share your idea that they probably hadn't met (or at least had only a very slight acquaintance) before Frodo's orphaning.

Author Reply: Thanks. That was the idea I always had, extrapolating from my image of Drogo.
Plus, not everyone has the ideal family, happily living in each other's pockets,
even if they are hobbits, I think.

Hello Rowan - glad to see this up! I did like this first meeting story - nicely done.

Author Reply: Thank you. I *finally* found the FAQ, and managed to bumble my way through
posting the story. Sorry to be such a dunce. I'll be OK from now on, I think.

This is marvelous! I can imagine these exact circumstances, and this exact (and perfect) dialogue. Your characterizations of a perceptive Bilbo and quiet but intelligent Frodo seem "right on", to me. I enjoyed this *very* much. Are you planning to continue this as a series?

Author Reply: Thank you! Coming from one of my favorite hobbitfic authors, that means a lot.
I wasn't really thinking in terms of a series, but hey, there's an idea. Maybe
my muse will take bribes. (She's rather taciturn, I'm afraid.)
